St. Edward’s Ecological Society hosted an educational and social networking event showcasing student research and academic achievements through the Wild Basin Creative Research Center on April 18th, 2023. Dr. Allan Hook’s widow was present to explain the Hook Fellowship and all of the ways in which it has and will benefit student research. Dr. Darren Proppe gave a brief overview of the mission and goals of the Wild Basin Creative Research Center. A few of the presenters showcased their work through the Hook Fellowship, with one looking into an analysis of upland and riparian habitats as stopover sites for migratory songbirds, and another implementing sensor-based monitoring of microclimates and soundscapes in the Balcones Canyons.
Following the Hook scholars, a few students from St. Edward’s presented their wonderful contributions! These included a study regarding mapping the soundscape of Wild Basin, one student’s stewardship and land management internship, and another’s road to becoming an ecologist. Not only was the event extremely interesting and educational, but it was also very well done and a great chance to socialize!
The presenters had many incredible findings and collected a lot of useful data. It was so special to see the presenters be excited about the work they’re doing, and that they’re fortunate enough to be able to do fully funded student research. The Eco Society, a student-run organization presided by Eve Dean, is an incredible resource for students who wish to be more involved in ecology and restoration. They do so many fun events and educational presentations and allow students to find community in ecological work!
