Similar to the Type Is Sound project, I had to create a symbol to a word that did not currently have a symbol to represent it. I wanted a word that was challenging and it was actually pretty difficult. The word I chose was UNIQUE and I wanted the symbol to be able to be used universally. When I initially think of Unique, I imagine a person, or an animal, or an object as being different, which is inevitably synonymous to unique. So I had to break it down into smaller pieces; I asked myself “What does it mean to be different?” Odd, strange, beautiful, ugly, out-of-this-word, striking, irregular. I began to gear more towards the ‘out-of-this-world’ phrase because it could be a positive or a negative connotation of unique, which is how it can be being unique! A deviation can be either beautiful or ugly, good or bad, it just depends but in the end, whatever it is, it’s different.
