To further students’ in-class curricular experiences, St. Edward’s students will engage in off-campus community-service learning project in a local school in Vina del Mar, Chile. Specifically, students will work with Middle School students to develop short films–based on photos they have taken with disposable digital cameras of their daily lived experiences in Chile, titled “Soy de Aqui.”
The general idea is for the Chilean students to develop a story of their lives in Chile with a topography of increasingly larger concentric rings. We will ask each student to document with photography who she is and what she likes to do that signifies who she is. From this center, we will ask the students to take pictures of their lives with their families, in their neighborhoods, around their city, and finally, about their country. After transferring these images to iPads, each student will construct a narrative-based iMovie titled “Soy de Aqui.”
The spirit and intent of this project is cross-cultural communication. Prior to leaving for Chile, each SEU student made their own “I’m from Here/Soy de Aqui” iMovie. During our first visit to the school the SEU students will share their own movies with the students as both a model and an introduction.
