Rake: New Small Business Technology

Bonjour again!

I had the pleasure of e-meeting the CRO, Chief Revenue Officer, of Rake, Mike Hendrix, through Twitter. (Who says social media doesn’t work!) Mike and I discussed a relatively new product for small business owners, Rake. Today we are going to go in-depth with what Rake is, and how it can be beneficial for your small business.

rake, messaging, messaging tool, small business marketing, small business tips, small business tools

What is Rake?

Rake is a technology company. More specifically they are a messaging-as-a-platform company. They think of messages as a foundational item in how people build and manage businesses. Billions of messages are consumed every day through vehicles like email, SMS, server calls, ATM transactions, and a lot more. Having a messaging platform like Rake, allows you to filter all these different messages into one organized hub. Learn more about Rake here.

“Rake has recently set out on a path to help companies, small and large, become more connected and improve efficiency in all operational areas of the company. We are especially focused on small businesses including start-ups and our pricing and promise reflect this focus.” -Mike Hendrix, Rake CRO

What does Rake do?

As a messaging-as-a-platform company, Rake provides chat technology for websites. Chats taking place between a customer or prospect and the client flow into an online workspace. Similarly, chats taking place through SMS, Facebook Messenger, Google My Business, and more also flow into the same workspace. Rake uses the word ‘omnichannel’ to represent all of these chats (messages) flowing into one workspace enabled for simple two-way communication between businesses and their customers and prospects. This solution is what they officially refer to as a 2-way omnichannel chat

Rake helps businesses use our 2-way omnichannel chat technology to make the most of the website visitor monitoring technology. When a visitor lands on your website, Rake will send an alert (message) to you. The alert shares the person’s name, location, and what page that person is reading/on. You are then able to proactively open the chatbox on the website with a custom or canned message and begin engaging with the website visitor.

The possibilities are endless for how companies can use this technology. They can begin sales conversations, they can conduct quick surveys, they can share new URLs they want to promote and if the company does not have an agent to complete this type of task, the chat automation feature can be used to help improve efficiency.

“As you can see, our technology works like well-oiled gears moving in unison to help our clients become more connected.” -Mike Hendrix, Rake CRO

rake, messaging, messaging tool, small business marketing, small business tips, small business tools

Rake’s task management technology is the perfect extension for businesses using chat. Before during or after chats are taking place, you are able to create tasks, assign them to co-workers and associate them with prospects and clients. Task alerts are sent and monitored and help company leaders manage and steer more effectively.

As tasks are built and processed it’s only natural for co-workers to collaborate and move the company forward. This is why Rake built and provided channel and direct messaging for co-workers and guests. All company stakeholders (leaders, customers, prospects, employees, investors, and more) can and should participate in conversations. This is part of becoming a connected company. Conversations on the Rake platform are infinitely searchable, they do not limit the opportunity to find past conversations, regardless of the number of conversations stored in your workspace. This feature is a big part of why Rake’s platform is great for new employees wanting to learn about company history and what it will take for them to be successful in their new role.

What are the Features?

Rake’s main features provided these main four solutions:

  1. 2-way Omnichannel Chat

  4. Collaboration

Rake’s Top 8 Features can be put into these categories:

What is the Price of this Cool Tool?

In thinking about how Rake wanted to serve small businesses and their customers in general, they did not want to be a typical SaaS bait-and-switch company that gave a small taste of the possible but did not provide meaningful no-cost options. This is why “we moved to free for small businesses, all features included”. Since the small business classification can be subjective, they put some numbers on their new price plans. For any organization, the user count of 1-10 equals free. See their pricing plans here.

If a company has 8 users for 10 years, they pay nothing for the platform. They can grow with Rake into new plans but if they remain at 8 users, they will have access to the current solution set and pay no monthly subscription or activation fees.

We bet on ourselves and our clients. We believe what we provide our clients is so meaningful they will use the platform to grow their company.” -Mike Hendrix, Rake CRO

Communication is one of the most important facets of a business. Making sure that you and your team are on the same page and able to reach customers without missing a beat can grow a business substantially. Incorporating a tool like Rake into your business can help everyone work more efficiently and effectively.

Free Small Business Social Media Story Creator: Canva Goes Mobile

Bonjour again!

Today we are going to *still* talk about Canva but on the stories segment. Now that we have covered how you’re going to make posters, logos, brochures, let’s get into a little deeper. With the help of this blog and Canva, you have become a master at social media posts. You are ready to conquer the next step, social media stories. You are looking at other businesses and see how frequently they are posting, with all these cool templates. How are you going to compete?

Cute Illustrations, Stickers, and Shapes to Bring You Story to Life

Another great feature is Canva having thousands of FREE stickers and illustrations you can add to your photos and make them stand out. You can search for anything! Animate Your Stories

The last step before you share your masterpiece, is adding animation. Canva gives you lots of different options to choose from. These animations make certain pieces of your story move, so make sure you look at each one to see which one (if any) really speaks to you. Once you find that animation that speaks to your masterpiece, then share it with the world!

Canva Stories is a great tool for small business owners to use while on the go. I love the convenience of being able to edit on my phone, and post directly from the app. Even if you don’t have stock photography made, Canva allows you to use their photo and video library FREE! The story templates alone are enough for me to use Canva Stories, but adding all the animation, stickers, and elements make it a must for small businesses trying to break out of social media slump. If you want to see how to make an eye catching Instagram story from scratch, watch the below Design With Canva on YouTube.

Canva Free vs. Canva Pro: Which is Better for Your Small Business

Bonjour again!

Today we are going to go more in-depth with one of my favorite free editor tools, Canva. We covered some of the best features for small businesses in the Free version of our last blog post. You can check it out here

canva, canva editor, graphic design, filters, effects, canva photo editor, small business marketing, small business tools

Let’s get into Sha!

What is Canva?

If you are new to the blog, Canva is an online graphics editing and creating platform. There is a range of collateral you can create from Posters to Social Media Posts in just a couple of minutes. You can create something from scratch, or use the provided templates. Canva has templates for every season, holiday, topic, industry, you name it, they have it! One of the main reasons I love Canva is because it is so easy to use for people who aren’t professional graphic designers. Canva has lots of great features for small business owners to incorporate into your marketing mix, so let’s get into which plan is best for you!

Canva Free Benefits and Features

Canva states that their Free plan is for individuals or small groups working on projects.

Top benefits for the Free Plan:

  • 8,000+ free templates
  • 100+ design types (social media posts, presentations, letters, and more)
  • Hundreds of thousands of free photos and graphics

Other big features to bring into the spotlight include:

  • Free logos, fonts, photos, videos, and graphics
  • Create Designs with Custom Dimensions (design anything, any size from scratch)
  • Multiple ways to export: PDF, JPG, PNG
  • Instantly share on social channels or presentation mode (like PowerPoint)
  • Share view or edit access to designs with people outside of your team through a design link
  • Built-in commenting
  • 1 GB of cloud storage

This is a lot of features to consider for the free plan. Just the 8,000+ templates alone would be great for using Canva for free. This would be perfect for a business that is very small in size, say 1-5 members on a team. It still gives you access to all the basic features you need to successfully get your graphics up and running as soon as possible. Also perfect for companies who want to keep their shop local, not planning on expanding their stores. Even though the features are great, do I need to say 8,000+ FREE TEMPLATES again?!, a larger company or a company that is planning on expanding would need way more storage, and design and publishing capabilities. Especially if you are going to be opening multiple stores, you want to use the same logo right, that is where Canva Pro can be helpful!

Canva Pro Benefits and Features

Canva states that their Pro plan is for individuals and small teams who need more customization and productivity, aka small to medium size businesses. This is what I would recommend to any company over a team of 5 AND it’s only $13 a month ($12.95 to be exact) but still a great deal. All you would have to do is eat and make coffee at home one day and BOOM! There is your $13 on Canva Pro.

Let’s get into Top Benefits:

  • 100+ design types (social media posts, presentations, letters, and more)
  • Hundreds of thousands of free photos and graphics
  • Create your brand’s visual identity with logos, colors, and fonts in 1 Brand Kit
  • One-click design resize
  • 60,000+ free templates
  • 60+ million premium stock images, photos, videos, and graphics
  • Upload your own fonts and logos
  • Custom templates

We have Canva Pro here at Analyzing Advertising, and it is WORTH IT! Just being able to add my logo to all my designs and the premium stock images are worth the $13. If you were to buy a single image from Adobe Stock it would cost you $80 ($79.99 to be exact). Why would I pay for that out of pocket when I can get a premium library on Canva for $13 a month? Plus the amount of graphics/photos/videos you can use in that month is endless. The library is yours, my friend.

Other great features of the Pro plan:

  • Everything in the Free Plan
  • Premium Stock Library
  • One-Click Design resize
  • Upload your own Logos and Fonts
  • Download graphics with Transparent backgrounds and customize quality
  • Export animated GIFs or MP4 videos
  • Create and publish social media content directly from the Canva Editor to 7 social platforms
  • Establish your brand’s visual identity across logos, colors, and fonts with Brand Kits
  • 100 GB of Cloud Storage

This is also where I will add that Canva Pro is available for Free for Nonprofits and Education institutions, so make sure you check those out!

Just to quickly touch on some of the other really cool benefits, besides the library and being able to use your own logos in your designs, one-click resizing can be a huge lifesaver. One-click resizing allows you to resize anything you are working on to another template. Say I really liked this social post I made earlier:

canva, editor, graphic design, post, social media, template

I like this graphic so much, I want it as a poster in my office, a flyer, and a business card. With the resize button at the top of your publishing bar, you can check off as many of the collateral pieces you want to make. Once you are done selecting your items, just click the copy and resize button and POOF! EVERYTHING IS DONE AUTOMATICALLY! I can not express as a graphic designer how much of a time saver this feature is! You might need to make some small changes, but it will take only a few minutes versus the hour it would take for you to create all these pieces again from scratch.

canva, editor, graphic design, resizing

Another big one is the transparent background and the quality of the downloaded image. Having a transparency background can make your images come off a lot cleaner if you cropped something and only want that cropped part shown. For example, if you were to create a logo in Canva, you wouldn’t want all that extra white space around the logo, you just want the design in the middle. You would need to select a transparent background in order to get just that logo design downloaded. The examples below show the difference between transparent and non-transparent. As you can see, the grey background doesn’t come up on the left, it just shows the logo. This would be used if you want to add this logo to another graphic, without having a grey background (or any background).

graphic design, canva, editor, backgroundcanva, example, graphic design, logo

Some platforms, like Facebook, require what is called a dpi (dots per inch) for images. Facebook requires a bare minimum at 72, but when it comes to non-digital platforms, having a higher dpi is critical. For example, taking that poster I resized from my social post earlier, I would need at least 300 dpi for a good quality print (doesn’t look “staticy”). This feature can be critical to companies who are running campaigns on multiple levels (print, web, social) and need similar graphics to coincide with the campaign.

Which Subscription is Better?

Honestly, this question is really for you to decide! Your company will be the one using this software, or at least I am assuming since you took the time to read this blog. Get in the software and use it! Seriously! I can tell you all the cool benefits of Canva, but you will never really know unless you see for yourself. Try the free version first to get used to it, play around with some of the templates, and see if this is something your company can benefit from. Once you start getting used to the platform and want to build out your company/brand/etc., I would suggest looking at the Pro plan to save time, money, and headaches! If you get stuck you can always reach out to me on my socials @analyzingadvertising (links below) or check out Canva’s resource center at the bottom of their website.

While you are getting started, check out Canva’s Design with Canva Playlist on Youtube on how to create and use all the templates:

Free Content Creation Tool for Small Businesses

Bonjour again!

Today we are going to go over one of my favorite free editor tools, Canva. Canva is so easy to use for people who aren’t professional graphic designers. Canva has lots of great features for small business owners to use and the best part.. It is FREE!

Let’s get into Sha!

What is Canva?

Canva is an online platform that allows you to create, edit, and customize all types of content or documents like Resumes, Flyers, Business Cards, Social Media Posts, etc. Canva has a FREE option that allows you to choose from a long list of templates that you can customize for your business. Colors, fonts, sizes, royalty-free photos and videos, and so much more.

How can I use Canva?

Canva’s FREE graphic templates allow you to save time and money on creating your own graphics. An hourly rate for a good freelance graphic designer can cost anywhere between $65 and $150 per hour. Those graphic designers who are already famous in the industry charge an hourly rate that starts at $300. At the low end, newbies charge from $25 to $50 per hour, according to Business 2 Community

Using a graphic designer would be great for a logo, but all the small items like business cards, flyers, and social media graphics can really get costly. As a graphic designer, the amount of time it takes to create an entire suite of products could take days, weeks, or months depending on the detail and how many pieces you want created. That is why I love recommending Canva to small business owners. It is a cost effective way for you to compete with some of the other big competitors in your industry and look really professional doing it!

Canva’s Best Features for Small Businesses.

  • Easy Drag and Drop Editor

Once you find a template, double clicking on the design, or drag and dropping from the editor will allow you to easily customize the design to fit your needs.

  • Upload Your Own Photos, and Use the Photo Color Picker

Say you had a buddy who designed your logo for you already. You spent time collaborating on that logo so you want to use those same colors. Canva now has a photo color picker, which easily allows you to recolor anything else on the graphic in your photos color scheme.

Once you have the photo, logo, etc. uploaded into your account, see side panel in uploads, you can double click to put the photo on the working canvas. Next, click on the object you wish to change the color, then on the toolbar at the top, click the font color icon. You will see the bar pop outs on the side and “Photo Colors” column appears. You then can change the color of that object to any colors in the photo you uploaded.

canva, canva editor, graphic design, editor, small business, small business tools

  • Royalty Free Photos, Videos, and Stickers

Want an animated social media post? How about a cute jumping ice cream sticker? Canva has it all! With tons of royalty free stock imagery, videos, and stickers, you can make all your designs stand out in the crowd or customers’ timelines. The best part is you won’t be sued for copyright infringement! If anyone hasn’t told you before.. YOU CANNOT TAKE RANDOM PHOTOS OFF OF GOOGLE. You will be sorry! These photos in Canva are from independent artists who have partnered with Canva, and give you one less thing to worry about (You’re welcome).

On the side bar, there are icons for photos, videos, and elements. The elements tab is where you go to find all your stickers, and other fun items like shapes, lines, graphs, charts, etc.

canva, canva editor, graphic design, small business, small business tools

  • Photo Editor

Now that you pick your photos, want to make them stand out? Once you click on the photo you wish to edit, the editor toolbar pops up at the top. Effects, Filter, Adjust, Crop, and Flip are the main tools in this editor, and really the only main tools you would need. Effects allow you to apply cool effects like pixelate, or remove a background. Filter is pretty self explanatory,  but you can add Canva special filters on top of photos. Adjust is where you can find blur, saturation, and other photo editing elements. Lastly, crop and flip are self explanatory. Crop is to crop your image and flip allows you to flip the photo horizontally or vertically. Also, if you want to change the intensity of any of the effects, they all have an opacity bar to increase or decrease the look of the application you decide to use.

canva, canva editor, graphic design, filters, effects, canva photo editor, small business marketing, small business tools

  • Publishing Options

Last item on Canva’s Best Features is the publishing options. You can download the item directly, or share it to your Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, or Twitter pages directly from the editor. So no more downloading and re-uploading into another platform. *Yay!!* This is a huge time saver for someone who wants to just create and go. Of course they have so many other options like printing, email, link sharing, or even embedding. Canva also allows you to save to third-party integrations like MailChimp, Dropbox, Google Drive. Not sure where you want to save it? Canva has a search bar for you to find what you’re looking for. Trust me there is nothing more Cajuns love than Lagniappe (that means something extra). There are so many options to share and save your work, you’ll never lose it!

Canva, canva editor, small business marketing, small business tools, graphic design, free editing tools

One Final Thing

I do want to mention that Canva does have a paid version, which I will discuss Pro’s and Con’s in another blog post. The Free version has so many cool features that I would suggest you try it out and see how it works for you, before you decide to pay for the Pro. Also, if you need additional help, have questions, or wish to learn more, Canva has a whole training academy where they teach you how to use their platform, and it is also FREE. Check it out here
