Unlike the observational mode, the participatory mode welcomes direct engagement between filmmaker and subjects(s). Here the interviewer or the filmmaker gest involved in the documentary and asks the person questions so we can know more about them. They are often hand held cameras that are being use so footage can be a little shaky or bad quality.
An example of this particular mode is Vertov’s The Man with a Camera film in 1929, where there is nothing but the lives of Soviets citizens the films cameraman and editor are also being film. In this way, there is no story and no “characters” to speak of. This is also an example of an un-biased footage almost all the participatory documentaries tend to go in that direction. There is another film that we saw in class its call the Chronicle of a summer, the subjects are in fact people representing their real lives, and not playing any role or acting as would be the case with any fiction or feature film.
With what I have learned in class about what makes a participatory mode and viewing the examples I was able to create a short film. My participatory film is a short documentary where both the filmmaker or in this case my sister who was holding the camera and me are interacting with one another. This interaction is when I turn around to talk to her or look at the camera. What I did was a similar style like the film we saw in class call Chronicles of Summer, when the director is asking questions to by standers and she is watching their reaction to her questions, We see this all being capture on film the expression of all the participants.
What I need its very similar I ask the question “What is the spirit of Christmas” and I got different results from different people. I interact with the subjects and my reaction changes with different responses. Finally it was fun to see their reaction to my question some of then laugh others gave me a funny looks.
