Poetic documentaries are more subjective and approach something from a more artistic and creative angle. Its main focus is on imagery of a personal feeling of the director or representation of something meaningful. Poetic documentaries tend to be more subjective according to Nichols (pg. 157) as each person will take something different. They rely on things like color, mood and tones, textures, sounds and rhythmic qualities.
A good example of poetic documentary is the film Baraka. We did not see this film in class but I look it up, when I search for poetic documentary films and it look interested to watch. It is a film with no voiceover just the sound of nature and musical melody that match’s the content shown in the feature. It is very subjective and abstract and in some aspect making me question my role in the world.
The film, which begins with an image of a solar eclipse, and it’s structured like an epic poem. With it’s beginning of heavenly sentiments, descends into hell, recapitulates its opening themes and ends with a celestial starburst. This was a poetic documentary on a grand scale its purpose is to visually show the variations of human and natural experience without relying on any narrative or dialogue.
Using what I understand of a poetic documentary I took some pictures representing nature as an untamable force. The pictures tell the story of rain how it starts with a calm whistle, grows uncontrollably to the sound of the beating drums and then after the storm comes the sun. As mention before everyone can have a different interpretation of the pictures that make the poetic film. Like Baraka the pictures demonstrate a meaning or thought that the director is trying to convey to the audience. Here are my photos and just like Baraka and Rain my photos convey emotions to the audience by using the shadows, color and nature. Creating an abstract poetic documentary.
“Just another day” “The ripples”
