Here is my Podcast for my ACL 2012 blog post for those of who would rather listen than read…with sound effects! šŸ™‚

ACL 2012

If you live in Austin and you don’t know what the Austin City Limits Music Festival is, then you might be living under a shell. This year’s festival took place this past weekend, October 12-14. The music festival took over roughly 50 acres of Zilker Park and brought in over 75,000 peopleĀ each day…that’s a lot of people. This year’s headliners included The Black Keys, Jack White, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and of course, The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I’ve gone to this music festival since my senior year in high school but I wasn’t planning on going simply because I’m a broke college student. Then, this happened:

I couldn’t believe it! I had won a 3 day wristband off of a Facebook competition hosted by Goodybag, a local Austin business. Check them out! I was ecstatic! Oddly enough, my boyfriend was able to stumble upon a free ticket as well so we decided to go together.Ā Que cute. I had a lot of fun, but I just don’t know if ACL is for me any more. It was a lot more crowded than last year and that’s kind of a deal breaker for me. Also, it’s getting a little pricey! I would just rather spend my money on something else…like FUN FUN FUN FEST šŸ˜‰ My pictures from this weekend will give you a much better recap than me rambling so here they are:

This is in the infamous Barton Springs entrance to the music festival. Everyone who goes takes a picture of it. True fact.

This picture is from Lance Herbstrong’s performance at the Zilker Stage. Yes, those are two large joints being passed around the crowd. His songs reminded me of Pretty Lights. Some were slower and more relaxed and others just made you want to dance so I did šŸ™‚

Presenting the Hot & Crunchy Chicken Avocado Cone from The Mighty Cone…definitely one of the most delicious things I’ve ever eaten. I can’t believe I haven’t eaten at The Mighty Cone before! Sad news is that they are either relocating or shutting down by March 2013 šŸ™

The Shiner Throne. My friend had this up at his house and it just made me laugh. It doesn’t really have anything to do with ACL but people do like to get especially rowdy during this weekend.

It was crowded.

THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS! From super far away…it was nice because no one else was playing during their show so you could hear their performance from any where in the park.

Fall Favorites!

Here in Austin, the weather is steadily changing. Today, the city has experienced three different seasons. This morning was like the fall season, cool and a bit cloudy. Then a couple of hours later, it started pouring cats and dogs! It’s like that saying, “April showers bring May flowers,” except it’s almost the middle of October. Then towards the afternoon, the sun was shining like it was summertime. That’s Texas weather for you…but anyways, believe it or not, it’s been starting to cool off here and by cool, I mean like mid to upper 80s. Compared to the 100s, that’s pretty cool!

Basically every store is starting to sell all sorts of Halloween candy, decorations, and yes costumes! Many of the stores in the malls and boutiques are starting to break out their fall/winter clothes. Although the leaves haven’t quite turned yellow yet, I’d like to celebrate the fall season by sharing some of my fall favorites, from candy to clothes! Since my birthday is coming up in a few weeks, this will kind of be my birthday list too (P.S. if you click on the images, it’ll take you to where you can buy the product…just in case you’re feeling a little generous šŸ˜‰

Isn’t this adorable?! I love that it’s a neutral color and the black polka dots make it pop a little…plus, I have a dress that this sweater would go perfectly with!

I love this sweater because it’s so bright, but not too bright. Teal has always been one of my favorite colors. It’s light enough to wear to class with jeans or shorts since it’s ALWAYS freezing in the classrooms at St. Ed’s.

Now, who doesn’t love a little animal print?

I know this palette has been out a while but I still haven’t been able to get my hands on it. Sad, I know. I absolutely love all the colors though! Neutrals are perfect for fall. Imagine all the looks you can create with all those stunning colors!

Cold weather induces laziness, especially in myself. This shirt its just another form of motivation to get my butt to the gym in the cold weather!

I hope all the ladies out there have gotten some inspiration for their fall wardrobe! I’m off to ACL this weekend. I’m too excited for words. I’ll be sure to do a post on it. Have a great weekend, see ya!

My Political Rant of the Moment

Good morning ladies and gentleman!

As you all know, the great Presidential Debate took place last night in Colorado. Unfortunately I could not watch it because I had class and I also do not have a TV. I also tried to watch the live feed on YouTube but my laptop apparently does not have flash player any more? Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s because my laptop is outdated. I might as well be living in the dark ages. Good thing I have a link to the recording so that I may watch it this weekend.

ANYWAYS, since I did not watch it, you may be wondering then why am I writing about it? Good question! The amount of feedback from my peers via word of mouth, Twitter, Facebook, etc. was astounding! I think itā€™s safe to say that my generation is becoming more informed than ever on current events, especially this yearā€™s Presidential race. Props to you guys. With that being said, while I was doing my homework last night, I kept checking my Twitter and Facebook to see what everyone was saying about the Presidential Debate. A lot of it was positive but a lot of it was negative at the same time. It also seemed like some people were talking or posting just to get feedback. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but when it gets to the point where someone is using vulgar language and racial slurs, itā€™s too much. For example, I happened to stumble upon a conversation where a young gentleman referred to Obama as ā€œan angry Muslim who is a smooth talker.ā€ He even went on to insult the whole Muslim religion. Not only is this disrespectful to the President, but it is also disrespectful to about 20-25% of the WORLD. Also, heā€™s facts are wrong because Barack Obama is indeed a Christian. To me, his comments were just classless.

It is completely okay to debate and discuss your beliefs and views but when you start offending others, it has gone too far. I must say I am proud of my generation for keeping up with the current political situation but I need to encourage everyone to become completely informed before you choose to get into a discussion some over politics or else it will most likely get headed and end very badly. When talking to someone about politics, always keep in mind that you do not want to offend the other person. If they start to get heated, simply end the conversation. You do not need to prove anything to anyone but yourself.

My Very First PODCAST!

Here is my Podcast for my @LILBTHEBASEDGOD blog post for those of who would rather listen than read!Ā Sorry if it’s not much, I’m still figuring things out! šŸ™‚

The State of Texas vs. Vivian T Le

About a year ago, I received my first speeding ticket in a little town named Brookshire, right outside of Katy, TX. I was going 84 in a 65ā€¦Iā€™m a speed demon, I know. Rather than having my insurance skyrocket again, I opted to take a comedy defensive driving course online. Honestly, it wasnā€™t THAT funny but Iā€™m pretty sure it was a lot easier and less dreadful than a regular defensive driving class. So after sitting at the computer for 6 hours listening to corny driving jokes, I finally ā€œgraduatedā€ and sent my certification of completion to the Brookshire Municipal Court.

Over a year later, I get a letter from the city of Brookshire stating that I had to make an appearance in court because I didnā€™t send any proof of completing a defensive driving classā€¦I guess it got lost in the mail or something. Anyways, I was rather confused and irritated because who wants to go to court. Oh did I mention the courthouse was about 2 hours away from Austin? I had two options: to show up in court at 9 A.M. with my certificate of completion OR pay a fine $114 and have a warrant out for my arrest. Itā€™s pretty obvious which choice I made.

So yesterday, I woke up at 5 A.M. to drive to the city of Brookshire to go to court. The drive wasnā€™t as bad as I thought it would be. I got to watch the sunrise, which was nice. It took about 2 hours and 15 minutes to get there. We showed up early so I figured I would treat myself to a nice honey butter chicken biscuit at Whataburger. I was SUPER nervous since this was my first time ever going to court. Luckily, my sweet boyfriend came along. When I got there, I was told to sit inside the courtroom until my name was called. Iā€™ll be honest, I was kind of expecting to be similar to Judge Judy but it wasnā€™t at all. The judgeā€™s assistant, interpreter, and the judge all sat behind a big, wooden counter. The prosecutor stood in front of the counter, calling out whose turn it was to walk up to the counter for their case. It was not formal eitherā€¦I mean there was a man wearing overalls. After about 20 minutes, my name was finally called and my case was mentioned. The prosecutor asked if I had my proof and I gave it to her and case dismissed! I didnā€™t even have to talk to the judge, which was a big relief because he looked super intimidating. Iā€™ve learned my lesson and my speed demon days are over. Speeding just isnā€™t worth it.

I’m a PhoNatic!

Pho on a rainy day is always a good idea. With a 100% chance of precipitation all day Sunday, my boyfriend, Jordan, and I decided to venture in to north(ish) Austin (Allandale to be specific) in search for a nice, hot bowl of Vietnamese noodle soup. With a little bit of help from Yelp, I stumbled upon PhoNatic. Call me cheesy but Iā€™ve always wanted to go to a pho restaurant with a punny nameā€¦you know, like Pho Shizzle, What the Pho, etc. Iā€™ve seen these pictures all over the Internet!

Since Iā€™ve moved to Austin, Iā€™ve found it a little difficult to find decent or good Asian food. I was so excited about finding this restaurant I decided to write a blog post on it so it is definitely worth trying! Note: I live in the middle of what people like to call Chinatown in Houston so Iā€™ve become accustomed to have authentic Asian food within walking distance. Also, Iā€™m Vietnamese. I know a good bowl of pho when I taste one! šŸ™‚

PhoNatic is one of the restaurants where you order at a counter and then they bring the food out to you. You can even order through a touch screen! The restaurant itself looked very new and had a very relaxed feel to it. It was also very well kept and clean.Ā They had a wide variety of Vietnamese cuisine on their menu from pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) to rice and vermicelli dishes and even desserts! They also had a variety of Asian drinks like Vietnamese coffee, Yeoā€™s Chrysanthemum Tea, and Yeoā€™s Soy Milk which ignited a little bit of nostalgia because I used to drink the soy milk sometimes ALL the time when I was a child.

For my lunch, I ordered the regular (they also have a large option) #203 (Phį»Ÿ TĆ”i BĆ² ViĆŖn), the Beef Noodle Soup with eye of round steak and beef meatballs. I wouldā€™ve taken a picture of my food (yes, Iā€™m one of THOSE people) but my camera on my phone is brokenā€¦so sad. The person who rung us up and brought our food out to our table was very kind and polite. Out of all the places Iā€™ve tried pho in Austin, I definitely liked this one the best. Other placesā€™ pho have either way too watery or super salty. The broth was not too salty and the serving size was perfect. A lot of other restaurantā€™s ā€œregularā€ sizes have been way too small. The eye of round steak was very tender the meatballs were not too rubbery like other places. They also had a condiment bar with green onions, white onions, cilantro, Sriracha, hoisin sauce, etc., which was nice because I usually have to ask the waiter for more sauce or limes. I just wish I had enough room in my stomach for their dessert. Overall, my visit to PhoNatic was a very pleasant one and I will definitely be returning!

@LILBTHEBASEDGOD

It is without a doubt that the power of social media is increasing more and more each day. Social networks such as Twitter, Facebook and even YouTube make it quite easy to reach a large audience.

The Based God himself

One person who has taken advantage of the social media platform to spread a positive message is Brandon McCartney, otherwise known as Lil B or ā€œThe Based God.ā€ Born and raised in Berkeley, California, he started rapping with a group from the San Francisco Bay Area, The Pack, at the young age of 16. It is when he began doing solo work that he became intensely involved in the social media world. It is said that he created over 100 MySpace accounts (back when MySpace was the thing) just to upload all of his music. What makes him different than many mainstream rappers/artists is that he raps about whatever comes to mind. Because of his unique style of music, Lil B has received a lot of criticism but people need to realize he is just completely being himself…something many of can’t do.

Although Lil B is widely known for his unique, eccentric, and sometimes vulgar style of hip-hop, Iā€™d like to focus on ā€œbasedā€ philosophy and lifestyle that he embraces and promotes. He has been known to use this term to describe his music, his lifestyle, and himself. So what exactly does it mean to be ā€œbasedā€? According to urbandictionary.com, it is a term to be based ā€œIs when you dont care what people think, itā€™s a way of life, doing what you want, how u want, wearing what u want.ā€Ā Okay so maybe

#BASED

urbandictionary.com isnā€™t the most scholarly source but it is pretty informative when researching todayā€™s pop culture. A lot of people claim that they act how they want but we all know they are under some kind of constraint whether it be their peers, the law, or society. After following Lil B on Twitter and Facebook, it is very evident that he is not afraid to be himself and wants everyone else to do the same. It is clear through his music and his posts through Facebook, Twitter, Tumbr, and YouTube that is truly living a carefree lifestyle. He recently gave a lecture at New York University that focused on being true to oneself, treating others with compassion and forgiveness, and ā€œretaining a sense of awe for the world and life itself” (http://www.mtvhive.com/2012/04/12/lil-b-nyu-lecture-photos). His tweets are my personal reminders to be positive and appreciate everyone everything little thing around you. He just has a positive vibe and thatā€™s why he has gained such a big following.

Here are a few tweets/quotes about his ā€œbasedā€ lifestyle and philosophy so you can get feel for what heā€™s all about:

ā€œWhat happened to humans? Everybodyā€™s thinking about capital gain. Iā€™m in this for the love. Iā€™ve been giving it to you for free. Over 2,000 songs.ā€

ā€œI LOVE TO SEE PEOPLE IN LOVE AND I LOVE TO SEE OTHER HUMANS THAT HAVE AT LEAST 1 PERSON THAT LIKES THEM, EVERYONE HAS THERE MATE HAVE YOURS CAME TO YOUR DOORSTEP? BEAUTY IS IN YOUR HEARTā€

Just a couple of his tweets from the other day…see, you can’t help but smile. He’s all about that positivity!

Here is a link to his FacebookĀ and Twitter if you’re interested to find out more about him!

The Standard ‘About Me’ Post

Even going through the phases/fads of Xanga, Myspace, AIM, Facebook, and Twitter, I’ve never really been that great about writing about myself so please, just bear with me šŸ™‚

My name is Vivian and I’m currently a junior, which is still a little shocking, at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX. My major is Communication with a focus on Advertising/PR. I was born and raised in Houston, TX and Texas will forever hold a place in my heart. I love food. I love looking at pictures of food. I would love to travel the country just to experience different cultures and try their food but since I’m a poor little college student, I’ll just have to put that plan on hold. For now, I’m just living up my college career in the wonderful city of Austin, TX.

Here’s a picture of me at Lake Nacimiento, California from this past summer. I fell in love.

I’ve always wanted to start a blog but I never knew where to begin. Luckily enough, my Interactive Media Production & Design professor is assigning us blog posts! I’m quite excited. My posts will be completely random. I don’t really have a theme so my blog will consist of just random topics I’ve taken notice of or been thinking about. Enjoy!
