After almost everyone has moved to online schooling due to the coronavirus outbreak, most people have been having a hard time adjusting to the change in routine and their new learning environment. Learning from home is something that students are having to deal with now. Some students will have an easier time adjusting, however, many have relied on face-to-face classes to get the best education they can get. That being said, it is important to implement some of the following steps if you’re having a hard time adjusting and staying focused while learning from home.

Find your learning environment

Whether that be your bedroom, living room, your parent’s office, or the kitchen table, finding your learning environment is important. Having a place to work and concentrate have been shown to increase energy levels and confidence, as well as improve your overall mood. When finding your learning environment, make sure that you have access to your necessary tools. For example, if you work on your laptop, make sure that your learning environment has an outlet nearby.

Space out study sessions

Making sure that you are spacing out your study sessions is helpful because it is hard for someone to maintain focus for large periods of time, especially if you are cramming a lot of information the day before an exam. Research has shown that spacing out study sessions will help increase retention over time. Even if cramming before an exam works for you, it won’t help with remembering the information after the exam is over.

Try the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique is a productivity method. The Pomodoro Technique has you work for 25 minutes straight (time yourself), then you take a 3-5 minute break. You repeat that same step 4 times, then you can take a longer break (usually anywhere between 15-30 minutes). This technique trains your brain to focus for short periods of time and helps you stay on top of deadlines.

We hope that these steps will help the transition between face-to-face classes to learning from home a bit easier on you, as they have been proven to help you stay focused and concentrated!
