We understand that finding time to work out in college is hard! Between all your classes, the clubs and organizations you may be involved in, and doing homework, finding time to work out may not be the easiest thing to do. However, it is important that you stay active to keep yourself in shape. Not only will exercise help your physical health, but your mental health as well. Here are four benefits of working out:
1. Helps lose/maintain weight
Whether your goal is to lose weight or maintain your weight, exercise can help with that. Exercise plays an important role in helping control your weight and prevent obesity (along with dieting and eating healthy of course). Being in college may have you going out to eat at fast food restaurants often because of how accessible, quick, and affordable it may be, rather than taking time to prepare your meals yourself. We are not saying that you shouldn’t go out to eat once in awhile, but make sure that you are keeping a good balance of healthy eating and exercise.
2. Helps improve mental health
Working out can help improve your mental health. During exercise, your body releases chemicals that can help improve your mood and make you feel more relaxed. This can help lower your stress and depression. As college students, this is a huge benefit. Especially if you are still in the transition phase, going from living with your family to living on your own in a different city, can take a huge toll on you. Exercising may be able to help your body get rid of the stress and turn it into something positive and beneficial for your overall health.
3. Helps improve your sleep
Studies have shown that exercise can help you fall asleep faster and for longer. There is no one that needs sleep more than a college student! Long days and nights full of classes and studying may have you feeling extra tired. Sneaking in a quick work out during the day can help you get a better night’s rest.
4. Helps improve brain function
Exercise stimulates your body to release proteins and other chemicals that improve the structure and function of your brain. That is super beneficial especially as a college student because we have so much work to get done all within said time. An improved brain function can help with our attention span in class, homework, and our other day-to-day activities.
Now that you’ve learned about the great benefits of exercise, take a few minutes out of your day to work out and make healthier choices for yourself. Your mind and body will thank you!
