According to Brother Gerald Muller, C.S.C., Brother Dunstan Bowles was a “short, spare, graying man with prominent eyes and a short goatee that he stroked habitually while clearing his throat as he pondered some profound insight he wanted to share with others. He was Brother Dunstan Bowles and for long years as a Brother of Holy Cross, he was famous for his dramas and dramatics, talents and tantrums, humor and humility and boundless love for God and God’s children.”

Given Brother Dunstan Bowles’s love of dramas and dramatics, talents and tantrums, the School of Humanities since 2006 continues to host an annual persuasive speaking contest in his honor. The persuasive speech contest is usually held the first Friday in April. All SEU students are eligible to participate. Each contestant must present an original 7-8 minute persuasive speech with identifying quoted material on a current social problem & advocate for change before a panel of judges and a live audience. Cash prizes are awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place and certificates are given to all contestants.
