Daniel Pink – High Concept High Touch

The idea that students going to medical school are taking art classes because it makes them more observant and their results more accurate is really amazing to me. The idea that  the current era is mostly about the right side of the brain is interesting because before people were mostly using the left side of the brain. The physical, manual labor side.

The more I read this article the more piece of mind I felt. Using the creative side of the brain is becoming more standard in education and it even makes people better at doing physical things. Nothing about having to learn from a book or specifics seems logical when you compare it to having to be creative. In real life, things change and nothing is standard (for the most part). The most logical way to teach is with variations. If something doesn’t come out perfectly the idea is that you adjust or you deal with it. That, of course, would be the creative way of thinking and based on how we are taught it is not the right way.

We are entering into the Conceptual Age which means that we are leaving the era of L- brain thinking (although it is still needed) and entering a stage of R-brian thinking.

What Is Design – Hara

This article really gave me some insight to what we call ‘design’ and where it came from and everything. Although I didn’t feel any strong emotions on anything in particular I can say that I appreciate the ideas and the references made by Hara such as to the movie 2001: The Space Odyssey. I like how they pointed out the differences of technology of weapons and showed that the design of those weapons changed with time. I really like the idea that design is based on how people perceive the world and that it transforms when people evolve or mindsets evolve. It makes me feel like what we call design could change any moment.

When it talks about how computers are not meant to be used to just swallow up design programs and that you have to think about what you make really struck a nerve with me. I’ve used all kinds of art programs for personal use and it takes me for ever to find the right one that I feel with help me produce the best product. On the internet, I see lots of people making art and over using filters or things like that but, they put out a lot of content throughout the day. I feel like it is important to not take technology for granted or to use it in a matter that isn’t thought out or meaningful.

My favorite part of the article was the quote “God created the world. Netherlands created the Netherlands.” The writer continues to talk about how everything in the Netherlands is seemingly designed by man. I’ve never been there but, I would really like to go if the place is as geometric as Hana described.
