HON1340: Defining Drawing

Drawing has a long history as a practical as well as a theoretical tool. Despite its relatively subordinate role over the centuries, drawing to a certain degree has always been an independent medium.  This course will explore drawing in a historical and contemporary context. Because drawing has the ability to fluctuate between thinking and doing, to function as a link between concept and execution the course will require students to analyze and participate in the process of drawing.  Students will read from a variety of disciplines to include art and science.

Students engaged in physical drawing, blind drawing, a walking practice and #StTarget project along with a drawing a day for the entire semester and a few other smaller drawing practices in conjunction with reading several articles and two texts on drawing and the drawing process. The work the students created will ultimately be collected into a book including images from a drawing-a-day, interviews and essays about what it means to define drawing. (link to book is to come.)

A certain amount of trusts was needed to really engage and I think that aspect was very successful considering none of the students was an art/gdes/phco major.
