This course is a continuation of ARTS 1316, as students expand upon pre-existing knowledge of line, volume, light, shading and perspective to initiate conceptual development in their work. This course is designed to expand the student’s use of materials and processes within the context of drawing and to specifically pose questions about concept. Emphasis will be placed on the exploration of color media and compositional choices. Subjects range from still life to non-objective drawing.
The course focuses on process and the perceived limitations of drawing. I use the text Drawing Projects by Mick Maslen and Jack Southern. The class rotates between in-class process drawing, larger projects and a robust sketchbook.
The course starts with a color still life using pastels. I have a link to the Experiments in Teaching presentation which gives visual evidence as to how the students moved from an individual pastel drawing of a still life to a transformative drawing installation.
