The following news story about the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt brings to light the current influence that the well established Islamic movement group has in Egypt. Being the oldest and most well established Islamic group in the country they’ve shown great patience and perseverance over time, leading to their now larger goal of gaining more political influence.

As they start to run for office throughout Egypt there are differing opinions about the groups goals and intentions. With hopes of gaining further influence in their home country as well is regional/global legitimacy the Brotherhood is refuting ideas that they have hidden agendas to make Egypt an Islamic state and imposing heavy religious law on it’s citizens. Another concern is that with a majority voice in Egypt the Brotherhood will not give fair representation to other religious and social groups across Egypt.

With their long and storied history it seems that it was only a matter of time until the Muslim Brotherhood stepped up to try and gain a political power in Egypt. Whether this will prove to be a good thing for the country and region is yet to be seen, but personally I’m a little skeptical. When any group based on religion gains political power, history shows that the results aren’t very good as it related to equality and human rights. With Egypt’s political and social struggles it’s hard to see the Muslim Brotherhood being the answer to their problems. I’m far from an expert on the subject though and invite any outside thoughts or education on the subject.
