Sophomore Portfolio Review

Over the past two years, I feel that I have grown as a graphic designer because I have learned more about InDesign, Illustrator, and After Effects. I gained knowledge on how to use more tools and specifically in Illustrator I feel that I better myself using vectors on every project. I transferred to St. Edward’s with a very basic understanding on these programs and now I can say that I have improved my skills and I have learned to think beyond the standards in order to fulfill the requirements for my projects.

The Symbol Methodology project was very significant to me because is where I can see a big jump on my skills of using the pen tool and pathfinder on Illustrator. This project taught me how to work with pathfinder and I learned to look closely for kinks on my symbols. It was a challenge to me to think abstract in order to come up with symbols but then I learned to keep massaging and iterating the idea until it becomes abstract. This project shows my improvement from the Typeface Design because for that project I did not pay attention to details or look for mistakes and now I take my time to work on my projects in order to check every detail and in case there are kinks, redo the work until there are no mistakes.

The other project that shows my improvement is the Weather Report. I have learned how to make better decision for my layouts, choosing the right typeface, and having multiple information on one frame but keeping it clean and legible. I also feel that I have grown on how to choose a color palette and comparing this project to the Typographic Poster, where I used the rainbow colors, I believe this project shows my progress. This project helped my skills on how to work with motion on After Effects and how to transfer a file with multiple layers from Illustrator to After Effects. The challenge that I always confronted was to keep information organized and I believe I achieved that on this project.
