ARTS1311_4D Line Project

“Held underwater told to scream your self-worth,

It wasn’t good enough.”

For this project we had to think about lines and how they can be shown in a 4D medium. I decided to take a video showing both a progression of time (think timeline) and a progression of growth in the mind of a man with a mental illness. There’s a line that connects point A (the beginning) and point B (or the ending).

I’ve been suffering with depression for a couple years now, going completely untreated. After reaching the worst point my depression has ever gotten to, I began to realize that getting that treatment is extremely necessary. I’m now meeting a therapist weekly and taking medication. But there’s still things I need to do on my own to help the pain. I’ve been using art to move past some of my issues. This can be seen during the 100 Solutions project where I got past being self conscious by showing my entire class a nude photo of myself. Or during the sculpture project, where I “burned away” my regrets in high school by physically burning yearbook photos. With this project I want to get past my insecurities, and man do I have a lot. If there’s anyone reading this that’s going through depression or anxiety or anything else, just know that there’s help out there for you. It could be your friends, family, a therapist, medication, or even art. Just take the first step to getting help. Believe me, it really can make a difference.

ARTS1311_100 Solutions

For this project we had to choose an object in various situations and scenarios that the object usually wouldn’t be in. Being a poor college kid, I chose the most stereotypical object: a pack of ramen. I chose this object in order to show an object that college kids can relate to and put it in odd or surprising situations. The ramen was used in three different forms: in bag, outside of the bag uncooked, and then the cooked noodles. I believe these ten images were the most odd and surprising images I took out of the 100. My favorite ten images are below, while the other 90 you can see if you follow this link: https://stedwards.box.com/s/g34gvohqn0ml18wvxmjzhdqez3iozb48

Getting to see Matt Lankes speak was a great opportunity. The fact that he’s worked with so many different celebrities is amazing. It’s also cool to see him using a camera that’s not used as much nowadays. It’s really inspirational to see as he graduated from St. Edwards. It gives me a lot of hope in achieving my dreams.

All of the presenters did a great job, and really motivated me. I’ve thought hard on my future and what I want to do with it. While I still don’t have very much figured out, I do have a little bit. Studying abroad is definitely something I want to do, and am working towards getting to that point. As for right now, joining a club, like Command G or the new art club coming up could be great opportunities that I’m going to look into.

The first alumni speaker, Camille, really interested me. The Lucine box caught my attention a lot (as it seemed to do with a lot of people in the class). With anxiety being something I once struggled with constantly, it’s great to see a non-medical way to fight this off. I’m definitely interested to see what Camille does next.

Abbas, the second speaker, was harder to understand due to technical issues with the microphone. Looking at his website though, there’s a lot of great looking projects that he’s created.

Part 1:

20160926-img_3495 20160926-img_3509

These photos were for a project I did in my Visual Studies class. We were asked “How do you make an image?” and were instructed to answer this using gestalt principles. I answered this by using containment and repetition to capture my point of view into a photograph.

Part 2:

  1. I believed I captured my point of view well.
  2. I could have studied the principles better and applied them in a more appealing way.
  3. I could have gone into taking the photos with a better idea of what I wanted to take photos of.
  4. I also could have brightened colors, slightly taking out blue from the photo.

VISU1100: Oen Hammonds

Oen Hammonds (IBM, AIGA Austin) came into our class to speak about navigating a career. I’ve always had a fear of failure so seeing how Oen explained success as not being linear really helped me. Success, as he explained it, came with a lot of failues, and a lot of going down before you can go back up. This has motivated me not to give up on what I want to accomplish. I may not have had much success with the attempts I’ve made at reaching my goal, but I have learned from the mistakes and know that I can get back up and succeed.

Seeing the upper classmen work was a great experience.

Getting to see Faith’s photographs inspired me to go out and get photographs of my own for class.

It was great seeing Mary’s work. I really enjoyed the typography (plus the “How should I play music?” cognitive map was perfect).

I also enjoyed Diana’s work. Being able to view the Tricycle drawing and the steps it took to get to the finished piece was interesting.

Omar and John’s work was awesome to see. I’d love to see where they get with what they’re working on.

Twitter I know using social media as my compelling website is probably overrated but I feel like Twitter has a ease of access that a lot of social media doesn’t have as well, so I wanted to include it.

Last.fm This website is actually a really simple design but I believe it works well like that. It’s engaging enough and it’s easy to get around.

Cinemark I guess I might as well promote my job’s website so here’s Cinemark. Very easy to maneuver and it grabs the viewer’s attention very well with a quick view of what movies their showing right away.

Discogs This website is used to show a user’s music collection (mostly vinyl, but CD can apply as well). I enjoy the simple layout and how easy it is to get into and use. You can also see my very own vinyl collection by following the link and how much money I spent (or wasted, if you look at it from a negative view point) on the collection.
