Student Garden Uplift: You Can Also be Part of it!

On a sunny Saturday (March 3, 2012), members of St. Edward’s Students for Sustainability (SFS) Organization congregated to prepare the campus garden and plant. Several students spent approximately five hours amending the soil and planting. Transplants and seeds were planted in the garden, increasing the variety of vegetables and herbs. Lettuce, tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, beans, and jalapeños are a sample of what has been added to the garden. The student group also decided to give strawberries and potatoes a try to check how they will grow in the fickle Texas weather. There are also herbs and flowers in the garden.

Students are encouraged to visit the garden at any time. The purpose of the garden is to educate students about garden management and to provide vegetables for Bon Appétit, the caterer on campus. SFS aims to expand the garden to supply a significant amount of the vegetables Bon Appétit as one of many ongoing efforts for St. Edward’s to become more sustainable.

Students take turns watering the garden and making sure the plants are well kept. Workdays are scheduled often. For more information about the garden and Students for Sustainability, check out the Facebook page for updates.
