Step D: Presentation Reflection

When we began the project we had many ways to work around it, and we decided that the best way to do it would be to find links between health care and the other wicked problems. It was challenging in itself to connect all of them but not impossible. One thing that was really helpful was the fact that we had interviews and viewpoints from the entirety of the spectrum. We had wicked problems from the viewpoint of caregivers for young children, young adults, adults, and the elderly. When putting everything together we decided the best way to represent the information would be through different types of media. We had a poster board, powerpoint with videos and the brochures. The color choice was used to represent the colors mostly associated with health care, red and blue. The final project presentation was really fun! Viewing all of the other projects and all of their data really put everything into perspective. It was also a way to realize how some of the wicked problems are more prominent and serious than others. For example how health care, poverty, food security, and housing are more serious issues for the Austin community than the crime aspect. Ironically enough crime should be higher than the rest, but what is Austin if it does not defy the odds.

WiP Project Assignment 4: Step B – Blog/Reflection

Considering that everybody in my entire group targeted health care through different perspectives–it was interesting to see how they all still intertwined with each other. We were fortunate enough to find view points from the entire spectrum–from individuals who care for the elderly: a nursing home nurse, a nurse from a well of high school vs a nurse from a high school with economical disadvantages: a nurse for young children: and the director of the health center on campus. All of these individuals work in the same general area, although in different environments, and they all had the same thing to say about health care. 1. It lacks affordability, 2. Cannot be easily obtained, and 3. the premiums are too expensive to keep. Considering all of this it truly shows how healthcare is a wicked problem, that if not solved soon could result in even a higher population uninsured. I was fortunate enough to be the one to interview Dr.Kelly, the director of the Health and Counseling Center here at SEU, he explained that teenagers during this age if it were not required by law, they would be uninsured. Statistically speaking young adults and the elderly are at a higher risk of illness, the elderly because of their deteriorating immune system and young adults (college students) because of the lack of self-care.obama-care-effects-medicare

Dr. Calvin Kelly

For my interview, I decided to look at health care concerning students–more specifically college students. Having a Health and Counseling Center on Campus made my research a lot easier. I was able to interview Dr. Calvin Kelly, the director of the H&C Center here at SEU. Interestingly enough he said the main issue surrounding Health Care as a Wicked Problem was the stigma associated with it. I had never thought of it in that way, but the way he explained it made so much sense. People,–college students–think that making an appointment in a moment of stress or depression automatically categorizes them as crazy, so they put off their wellness to avoid being labeled as such. Health care is such an important aspect of everyday life, Dr. Kelly said. He made it clear that if our state of mind or health is not at 100%  we do not function at 100%. Which affects school, workforce, and other activities. fullsizeoutput_8e2dr-ck

Dr. Kennedy Presentation

In his presentation Dr. Kennedy, brought to light how photography in itself is an art that can be classified as a wicked problem. One of his main points revolved around the perspective photography can take. He explained that the perspective depends a lot on what the photographer wants to depict in the image itself. Although the image perspective relies on what the photographer shows the image interpretation is dependent on the viewer. What one might see as beauty someone else might see chaos. His artwork was one of things I enjoyed in his presentation. The colors and stills just made the artwork a lot livelier and added depth. He once again shows how art is a game of interpretation through his own artwork. Dr. Kennedy didn’t only provide a lot of background about himself but his presentation was also very informative about other important artist and even included and image of the first photograph! (which I have seen on display at the HRC). Overall he’s just a really cool and interesting guy and I would enjoy learning more about art from him. bill-kennedy

Week Four Reflection

I am currently in the Unintuitive Maths LLC. With my groups project chosen wicked problem being health care I believe that I can tie math in with statistics about the amount of people in Austin that lack health care. And with that go into the whys of it. Is it a transportation issue? Or maybe the many that lack health care cannot afford it. Another way my 1321 course could tie into our group project would be through possibly the amount of medical facilities that are available in the Austin area and If they make it possible for the everyone to access them when in need.Image result for smiley face emoji

Austin CAN Presentation on September 12

The presentation given by Raul Alvarez was really informative. Raul went to Stanford for an accounting degree but due to the unavailability of that major he chose to pursue an engineering degree. He has been a former elected official for many big board corporations and deals a lot with the public policy in Austin.

It was interesting to hear him talk about the wicked problems that surround Austin. I found that extremely helpful as well because it allowed me to connect with my LLC class on a deeper level. It was also fun to hear about CAN’s 25 organizations, including health, transportation, government, education, business and workforce and many others. Alvarez also brought to light a lot of the issues that surround Austin and offered ways to solve the problems. He also provided a lot of information on the demographics of Austin and how those numbers changed and will continue to change in the coming years.

First blog!

Over the course of first two weeks of school, I find that the seminars have really helped in getting informed. I learned how to correctly set up my blog and how to work all of the features that come with it. Also got to pick a really cool theme! Getting to see everybody who is in the Wicked Problems LLC on Mondays was also really cool, I hadn’t realized that so many people where in taking the same courses. Another cool thing where the STEM seminars. It was really cool to get to hear from Michael L. Guerrero and Dr. Kopec about all the great opportunities that are out their for us to take advantage of. And to finish off, here is cute picture.bslrvi5imaa7br1
