  1. There are solutions towards complicated issues such as housing, however, I did realize most people think the issues are too “wicked” so they simply ignore them, deeming the problems as too complicated. I think this Wicked Problems opened my eyes to this. I never thought about ever trying to “fix” homelessness. This would be very beneficial for students who are interested in social work or municipal politics.

Co-curricular

It’s on Us Panel on Sexual Violence:

On the panel, there were advisors who were experts on sexual violence and told about how the crime rates were increasing. However, the talk mainly focused on statistically rather than solutions in theory. Here, our fellow LLC member, Josh asked questions about how the famous basketball rape case was similar to other cases the panel was discussing.

Poetry Slam:

On 10/27, the poetry slam was focused around personal perspective towards sexual harassment. Here, not only students but alumni and other’s who have expertise in the field were there to participate. The program was very successful and emotional.

Mouthful Play:

The thematic focus of the play was a satirical but truthful concept about “doomsday” or the end of the world. There were about 5 plays that foreshadowed and talked about the depletion of our natural resources and how we, as humans, are only to blame. The play’s purpose was to inspire us to change while we still can.

Kelsey Timmerman:

In the Kelsey Timmerman reading, the author focused around both of his books and doing comparisons and contrasts between the two.

BP #4

I have ideas for the project final. We are doing a brochure, as well as a tri-fold, and visual representation of our wicked problem. The group is still in preliminary stages of planning, but I have a basic visual representation sketch that we are going to use to demonstrate the cycle of housing and how it is a positive-feedback loop. Through the use of the tri-fold and brochures, we may inform how this cycle of housing has devastating statistics in its growing numbers in our local area as well as how to break the cycle in certain areas.

From the discussion in my Wicked Problems LLC, Photography, Bill motivated us to envision our project and how we are going to demonstrate to the public what we have learned and what we are going to do about it. Bill is also promoting professionalism making our standards higher for the final project, this is the new insight I have gained for planning stages. I believe by understanding of how I’m going to try to solve the wicked problem in presenting has helped me become less frustrated with my current feelings with housing.`With the collective information in my group we are almost there!

WiP Step 3

In my interview, I questioned a City of Austin congressional representative’s assistant, Lauren Avioli on the debate on how to solve/ understand the wicked problem of housing. The subject that my interviewee was in charge of was a program called ‘Roof Over Austin’ which has been going on for 6 years. This program is different from my team members interviewees because this program enforces permanent housing, while the majority of the programs serve for temporary housing. Lauren was somewhat helpful over email. She asked me to refer back to the website for a lot of the questions and I did, finding a lot of answers to the questions. She gave me a quick history of the program’s past projects which included data from the beginning of 2010. I learned a lot about the struggles of trying to find a solution towards the wicked problem of Housing. The assistant was hesitant to answer my questions, she gave me a very vague analysis that I could have concluded on my own. She did explain, however, that housing came in with a lot of different components as well such as crime, job loss, health crises, domestic violence and substance addiction which is something that we covered in the seminar.

Picture Story

Halloween

You look behind you and see a dark, tall figure. You run into your apartment and lock the door, but hear a knock. You hear clatter outside and see the figure coming from the balcony. You run into your room to hide… Then you realize it was Chaz in his Halloween costume just looking for some ice cream.

Thematic photographs

Warmth

Warmth transcends a single word. There is an association with warm colors, warm feelings, and physical warmth referring to a cozy warm in blankets or a warmth of hot air with a cigarette. I captured warmth in specific different ways, but it is all interrelated by the association of the general definition. I am very proud of the thematic piece, I feel emotions with each photo, rather than the solely enjoying its aesthetic. It’s important for photographs to invoke emotions because it makes the experience more personal, and I feel I did this here.

Dr Kennedy

How is photography a wicked problem to Dr Kennedy? What surprised, shocked, interested, or scandalized you from his presentation?

Photography is a wicked problem to Dr Kennedy because it is a conflict when he wants to define his photographs as art, and they are pushed in the category of digital manipulation. What defines the line of art? What defines the line of photography manipulation? Kennedy states in our case, photography is a wicked problem because of its ambiguity of what is truth and what is a lie. Also, using photography to shoot others in the moment, is that a right against our privacy?

Kennedy’s presentation was very interesting when he pointed out the background information and the conflict it arises in society especially journalism. Like above, what defines truth in today’s media? And what is simply for symbolization, enhancement, and/or money.

Week 6: Visual Representation

img_1508

Prompt: This week, we explored the background of our problem in Austin. I created this visual representation to help make sense of the system we are exploring. Here is an explanation of what I created:

For my visual representation, I drew the loop of homelessness and the aspects that contribute towards the loop, such as negative stereotyping, unemployment, housing costs, and drug addiction. However, with aid from the group discussion on Monday, I tied in ideas that we thought could be solutions to the loop of homelessness in order to break the cycle. For example, educating the public of the truth of homeless people can help break stereotypes and in turn help get homeless people hired, decreasing unemployment, and allowing easier accessibility for housing costs.
