Assignment 3 Blog

For the group assignment, my group wanted to reach out to officers, lawyers, judges, anyone who has performed jury duty, and victims of crime for their insights on crime. We had some complications where as the people we have contacted have not responded to our requests. Fortunately I was able to get an interview by someone who was a victim of theft. This individual was not my first choice but I was able to ask questions and get responses from them. When I read the responses to the questions I have asked, I felt that the answers I would read would probably be different from if I were to ask a lawyer of their views and a judge despite them all being related to the field because they each play a different role and, as one would assume, view things slightly different. But after reading the responses I had the feeling that a lawyer and judge would have responded the same way as to how my interviewee has responded. This was able to give me more insight to the wicked problem of crime because it made me think that if a lot of other people have the same views as the person I have interviewed, then that would mean that solving this wicked problem would prove to be a lot more easier than anyone would have first assumed.

Dr. Kennedy’s Lecture

On October 3 we were given a lecture on photography by Dr. Kennedy and I must say that it was an absolute honor to have him. His pictures were extraordinary and unique especially with how they are designed. It was funny to hear him say that he would drink about one bottle of beer and from there he would be in the process figuring out of how to do his pictures. Of all the things I could imagine to be a “wicked problem,” photography, for me, would not be at the very top of the list but for Dr. Kennedy it is and I like his reasoning for it. Thinking about it now, it would make sense that photographs would be on the list since one of the many ways we find out about “wicked problems” would be through pictures. If you were to do a report on a “wicked problem” it would not be as effective unless they had pictures to boost the effect and have them play as “back up evidence” to the other information displayed through charts and graphs. One thing that surprised me about his lecture was how passionate about his work and how he is entirely convinced that photography is a wicked problem. Not saying that I disagree to him but as to how firm he is on his stance on the topic.

LLC Topic Part B

llc-topic-of-crime

This word document contains our topic of crime and what is related to the topic. Related things such as the criminal involved, the victim(s) of the crime, location, the law enforcers, and the punishments that follow for committing said crime. Each branches off to exactly how they are related such as how the criminal has history with crime along with other like their motive for doing the crime.

Week 4 reflection

In my FSTY 1321 course, I am doing mathematics and in the group assignment I am the Community keeper and the Critical Friend. How I can incorporate these two together is very simple. Our group’s topic focus is on crime which goes very well with the math that I am taking. We have learned probability and statistics to a certain degree and with that we can accurately calculate crime rates, the percentage of who is committing crimes, etc. In relation to how I am going to use what I know from my math class to roles I am taking for the group assignment is a little vague as of now but I have an idea as to how I can use with my role of “critical friend.” In math, to solve a problem you have to take everything into consideration like the numbers given and the variables. So for me to use it as a Critical Friend I would be able to let my teammates know if we aren’t taking everything into account.

Austin CAN Presentation on Sept 12

At the seminar this Monday I was exposed to a presentation that opened my eyes to things I never knew as an actual issue. Each second that passed was one useful and knowledgeable piece of information after the other. One of the elements that caught me by surprise the most was the success rate among the minorities. I thought that each minority listed in the presentation would have about an equal rate of success. However it turns out that that was not the case. The statistics showed stated that Caucasians and Asians have the higher success rate compared to African Americans and Hispanics or anyone with a Latino background. Throughout the entire presentation I felt surprised and and well-informed and am very grateful to have seen the presentation.

My first post!

So here I am introduced to my very own dashboard. Can’t wait to see the things I’ll be doing here.tinytim2
