The point that McLuhan and Fiore were trying to convey in “The Medium is the Message” was the interesting notion that the new inventions and media that were created to further us as a species have become a part of the human condition, hindering us from progressing. In other words, the things we create are the very roadblocks that prevent us from developing as a human race. Our world is now accustomed to living a certain way and cannot go back to a simpler way of life. The modern media also has a profound ability to alter the opinions of the public. McLuhan uses various movies, radio, TV, and images to explain his point. Fiore’s dramatic book design and use of images (and lack of images at times) effectively drives home the point that McLuhan strives to convey. I found the sound that went along with the text to be very psychedelic and somewhat distracting while trying to understand and read.
