To be quite honest, I’m not entirely sure what the purpose of our third trip to South Congress is, and I didn’t think to ask for clarification until I finished shooting and started writing this reflection. I’m basing my essay on the presumption that we are continuing to look for Gestalt and that we are trying to continue forming/evolving our theme, and maybe editing our photos some as well.
Discussing my theme first, I found out the problem with creating a time of day or specific day theme- if you can’t go during that time then what do you do? For the last project, I made my theme the atmosphere on a Saturday night, but for various reasons I couldn’t go during that time. I decided that I could go early Sunday afternoon and see how the atmosphere was different. The vibe was absolutely different, with bustling, bright-eyed people everywhere and everything seeming much brighter and happier than it usually did. I wanted to capture the people more this time around since everyone just looked so wonderful, but I couldn’t find the courage to ask people for pictures and ended up using my zoom lens to take rather stalker-ish photos from the distance, which definitely didn’t have the vibe I was looking for. Then I worked on capturing bright colors to grasp the feeling of the atmosphere, and hoped to edit them to make the colors pop even more and make the shapes feel stronger, but haven’t had a chance to do so.
As far as Gestalt goes, I think I used proximity (the cup and ashtray and the blue ashtray and earring), repetition (the planters and the shapes/ colors in the blue ashtray pic), closure (the cat head), and similarity (in the colors and shapes of the building and sky pic).
