Facebook Online Privacy

Facebook just changed its privacy controls, making it impossible to hide from Facebook Search.

Unfortunately, the bulk of users that are even aware of these changes will probably spend more time complaining about it instead of either learning about the changes or doing something about it.

Learn
According to Mashable,

“The new privacy tools will make it easier for you to pick which of your friends or subscribers can view your personal info, status updates and photos, according to Reuters. It also makes it simpler for you to request that a photograph of yourself be taken down by the uploader.”

There’s good news and bad news here. The bad news is that these changes are driven by Facebook’s desire to offer better advertising options to brands. Like it or not, brands have always come before users on Facebook. And it’s because brands pay for Facebook. But the good news is, while you can’t hide from search, you CAN control who sees what content. Facebook is putting the onus of individual user privacy into the hands of the individual – albeit at a granular and incomplete level.

CNET reminds us that I may be a bit Pollyanna in my outlook.

“Facebook has mostly just fostered apathy in the vast majority of its subscribers — and confusion among those who are paying attention to what Facebook is doing with their activity and the resulting data.”

Facebook is horrible at communicating privacy changes. The apathy and confusion mentioned above plays to Facebook’s advantage. And they are user issues of Facebook’s own design. I’ve always learned about changes from users — never Facebook itself.

Do
Had I written this earlier in the week, I’d have suggested voting via Facebook’s community voting process. But there was not enough voter turnout — the option has been eliminated. Users can still do something about it though. They can either get Medieval on their privacy settings or they can leave Facebook.

I know about 1 billion reasons why most users are more likely to complain than to leave Facebook.
Bottom Line?
No matter how self-entitled the user base may become, Facebook is a free site. We play by their rules. And whether it’s Facebook or any other corner of the internet, it’s up to individual users to manage their privacy. Facebook makes this clear time and time again. Whenever I get online privacy questions, it’s usually from someone that wants to create a private/stealth spot on Facebook. And whenever this happens, I point to my favorite venn diagram (above).

The brainstorming of social media

I wanted to post about this specific picture on my weekly blog because it is represents the brainstorming of social media nowadays. I believe this picture means how we do perceive social media in our minds or perhaps the most popular trends related to social media. I love that pictures because it reminds me how we have talked the significant of tags in class. Tags allows a better and more precisely search on the web. It allows I would say a better access to what we are looking for. When I look at this picture I agree about all the word that is putting in there. Except for advertising, indeed to advertise it means to you have to pay to get your information out there whereas I believe that social media is a free access to informations. Lots of business companies like having a social media access to be more closer to its costumers and interact with them. It is also a better way to have more credit on the information you want to delivers.Social Media is about interaction with its peers and also contribute to spreading the word on information we want everybody to know about. It is always available no matters where we are during the day or at night as long as we do have access to the internet. Most of the teenagers using it to entertain themselves for getting some ideas on things or doing it for humor and put funny stuff. That is for sure that social media has been a phenomenal invention of our time because it get us closer as people coming from different cultures and backgrounds. It helps us understand others as well I think. Social Media is a great way to goes beyond boarders within a second and a click on your mouse. The digital world has changed a lot thanks to social media and will in my opinion continue to do so and take our breath away with all the things we can do with it.

Social Media has increased the way of communicating beyond borders!

Today my weekly blog will be focusing on how thanks to the social medias, we are able to communicate beyond borders. Which on of my main focus on of my blog. I will be talking today about an article that I found an article written by Ingrid Lunden. It was published on monday, may 14th 2012 but the (ITU) aka The International Telecommunication Union. This article is talking about how much the worldwide has been hooked on social medias for several reasons! “ITU says in a new report that that the number of people using all social media services have passed the 1 billion mark.” They are also mentioning the three top social networking and how much worldwide users do they have: “Facebook (900m+ users), Twitter (200m+ users) and LinkedIn (120m+ 150m+users) — the rest of the playing field is heavily localized, with services like QQ in China, Vkontakte in Russia, Mixi in Japan, and Google’s Orkut in Brazil, India, and Paraguay among those competing in the space, the ITU notes.” It is also reporting that since the smart phones has appeared in our societies, the access to social networking has become more faster and more easier at any location you are located. Even Facebook has agreed on it: “Facebook has been telling us: mobile is fast becoming the main way that the vast majority of people are using its service.” They also add “That’s partly due to the fact that, although broadband usage continues to grow, the number of fixed broadband subscribers is still nowhere near the majority of households in most countries. ITU notes in the last five years, the number of fixed broadband users has nearly doubled, and by early 2012 they stood at 591 million — in other words, equivalent to just over half of the number of all social media users.” On the other hand, not all the population do have access or have either never had the experience of using the internet. It is the case in poor countries where it is very difficult to have access but not only, it is also very expensive. “ITU notes that developing countries have penetration of as low as 4.8 percent of users. Industrialized countries, it says, have average penetration of 26 percent. Part of the problem remains the affordability of broadband services: in Africa, for example, the average monthly price for broadband is still more than three times that of the average household income. Overall, there are still 5 billion people worldwide that have “never experienced even low-speed Internet, or have only experienced it through public or shared access.” it is also the same when it come to mobiles devices internet access. “only 8.5 percent of the population in developing countries had access to mobile broadband in 2011, with only five percent of global use coming from low-income countries.” To conclude I think that the worldwide population have a huge impact on social medias yet we must do not forget that it is not as big as we can imagine because they are many places on earth where internet access is truly very limited or even do not exist at all.
There are now 1 billion users of social media users worldwide

The Future of Google Reader and Google News

The Future of Google Reader and Google News

Today my post will be focusing on a article that was written in March 16th 2013, by Mickael H. This article talking about what the google industry has planned for his future of the news products such as Google Reader and Google News. Google announce that it will be time for google reader to be “retired”. They don’t want to make google reader completely disappear but they want to find a way to put it in a Reader API within google or might might be redirected to Google+ even some of the workers has been moved to on Google+. It might possibly be copy that some companies as well like Feedly or Digg. I do believe that Google want to drag Google Reader News into Google+ because most of the RSS sources has already Google+. They think that the transaction would be much more easier for everyone. They also talked about how Goggle News Reader is such a killer product to use on your mobile device that allows you to follow all the update news you want on your selected topics thanks to the realtime coverage. Indeed it seems that the future of Goggle Reader and Goggle News are in good hands and will be part of a 3rd party apps. The good news is that Goggle Reader ain’t going to be taken away forever but rather being redirecting into Goggle + for more easier updates and realtime news products for anyone that would like to use it or continue to use it.

Redefining Public Relation in Age of Social Media

Today I will be talking how we can redefining public relation into the 21st century. Indeed public relation don’t have any specific definition because it is depending on a lots of tasks in terms of the organizations expectation. According to an article from The New York Time, the Public Relation Society of America want to redefining “Public Relation” more appropriately to nowadays considering that the definition hasn’t changed since 1982. Today public relation professional, academics and students are involving on what should be the best appropriate definition for public relation in the 21st century. The current definition of Public Relation is “helps an organization and its publics adapt mutually to each others” but what have changed public relation’s definition most are the evolution of the internet and how easy it can be to communicate with each others nowadays no matters where you are living on earth thanks to blogs, Facebook or twitter that now is two ways process comparing to before where it was like a monologue and a one way process. “Before the rise of social media, public relations was about trying to manage the message an entity was sharing with its different audiences,” Mr. Lavelle said. “Now, P.R. has to be more about facilitating the ongoing conversation in an always-on world.” They think that having a new definition for public relation would help in order to attract people who would like to work in that field and who who might considering be hired by public relation firms. Dan Tish even said that the search for having a new definition of public relation is a “critical exercise” because it has to reflect in deep details on what public relation is all about. They need to redefining because public relations have some serious image look issues because most of the people seeing it as spin and they want re valorizing the image of public relation nowadays a brand new image that will valorizing a positive image of what is the purpose of public relation and why it is so important into the society to have good public relation within it is internal or external!

South Park Facebook

Hello you all again!

Hope you are still enjoying my blog. Today for my new post I decided to talk to talk about this new episode that the famous South Park been about. Beside being realistic they also using lot of humor that all of us (Facebook Users) can relate on. For instance, how your parents or family members might react if you don’t adding them as their friends on Facebook. How the fact we taking things too seriously online. Fr example if you are in a relationship with someone but you don’t put it on your profile. Sometimes if we do put things online it is because we want it to keep it private or personal. To some people they can take it really bad. This competition of building your online community is also a fact that can drive you nuts. Seriously it is not the amount of how many friends you do have. It rather the matters of having real good friends on which you can count on no matters what. I think that what south park wanted to pass it on as a message is that we should take our “Online Life” too much in consideration. I mean that it is good to have an online community and build new contact but I do think that you have to be yourself online as in your offline life. Don’t do something because someone else told you to do so if you don’t really want to. like asking someone to be your friend for instance.

I think that south park did a really great job representing the Facebook user. I think that people should cool off with social media even if I know what I a talking about it is very hard when you are used to it. Social Media are good for some free time but don’t do it all day. Social Media might ruined your life like friendship. You can become unsocial due to all the time you spend online. I think that Facebook has impact our lives like no one would have ever imagined. We are bombarded by Facebook all the time no matters where we go.

I am really exciting for this blog because I am looking forward to share my thoughts about Social Media who who are very important to me. Probably because I am part of this generation that gown up with it. Social Media is such a great tool to keep in touch with your family and friends no matters where you are. For it is awesome considering I am not able to see my loved ones everyday due to the distance. As crazy as it can be, social media has helping me a lot through some difficult times. It helped me the strength to accept me who I am. Also got to met some awesome people who were stranger in the beginning that became some really good friends of mine! We even got to meet up at some occasions. It was amazing because it was like we have known each others for a long time. Of course as everything, Social media do have some bad sides and you do have to keep a track with you you are talking too. Because Internet can be fun but also very dangerous. So pay very close attention with who you are interacting.

Voila, I hope that throughout the semester I will be posting weekly blogs about my thoughts, articles, videos to illustrate how much social medias has an impact on our everyday life. How Public Relations has also to manage with the advancement of our society and had to adapt to this new way of communication within the cooperation or for its own relationship with their clients or audience. Social Media is a big industry that is well known so widely that everyone around the globe has access to it. I find it incredible that even with the people that living thousands and thousands of miles away you can still interact with them as they were close to you. Technology has always fascinate me. How so quickly we can get informations with just one single click. The internet has become one of the main way to communicate with each others but sadly we are nowadays becoming more dependent to it due to the access of having a smartphone.

Are we too much connected?

I find this article on my twitter timeline as I am following Huff Post called “We live in a Facebook and Twitter world, When will that change?” posted on January 28th 2013 by Craig Kanalley. I wanted to share it with you all because I think this interesting how journalism pursue the world of social media. This article pretty much are talking about how much obsessed we are about social media. Like they even said “We are bombarded by advertisement that saying Follow Us or Like Us”They also talked about how much Facebook and Twitter are the two big dominant of the social media industry. However they are more other social medias coming on the way but even though, they do have pretty big reputation (Instagram), they can’t barely compete Facebook and Twitter.

The journalists, Craig even complaining about the lack of social media’s challenger. According to him, Facebook and Twitter are still so much powerful because we as humans loves keeping with our habits. We don’t really like to make changes or even adapt ourselves in the technological advances of the social media industry and better prefer to stick with ones we do have.

In my opinion, I do believe that Social Media did have a huge impact on our everyday lives. Whether it is for work or personal purposes. Social Media has become our hobbies or either an significant tool for our job in order to communicate with our surroundings and or costumers. It is also a very great way I think to keep in touch with the world that surrounding us. Within a fraction of seconds, a news can be spread and so everyone are aware about it. I think that it is so fascinating to think about how much we as people can live the same event no matters where you coming from. Speaking of which The Super Bowl can be the perfect example as it is happening right now. Thousands of people from even around the globe are sharing pictures, videos, comment like status for Facebook and Tweets for Twitter. They even use hash tag that can be worldwide trending that it can be the case for #BeyonceBowl . I find this super amazing that even thousands miles away from each others we can live it live together! To me, Social Media is truly important because it keeps connected with my loved ones and also get to meet awesome people online that shared the same interest as you.

We live in a Facebook and Twitter World, When will that change?
