Last blog post I talked about how beneficial Twitter is and how important it is to follow other people that are in the same industry as you. Today I am going to discuss how important it is to create a professional Twitter page for your business. The first thing someone sees when they go to someone’s Twitter page is their picture and brief description. In order to really catch their attention it is important to make sure you have a professional picture of you or your business and a relevant description of your business.
Julia Engel is a professional blogger who focuses on fashion and beauty. She uses her Twitter page to promote her blog and current fashions.
Her Twitter handle, as shown in the picture, is her blog name which gives her readers easy access to her work. One of the most important things in Twitter is having a username that is relevant to your business or brand. Most of the time people search for a business by their name and if your product doesn’t pop up on their search list, it is going to be very difficult for someone to follow you.
Once you have a Twitter name the next step is to add a profile picture and a background picture to your page. Since Andrea Whaley of Wardrobe Interventions has her own personal business I think it is important that she has a professional picture of her self as her profile picture so people can connect her face with her business. Another important part of your Twitter page is having a good background picture behind your profile page and description. People like to be entertained so having a fun but suitable background picture can really brighten up your page.
Andrea does a good job of having a good profile picture but could work on having a more fun and stylish background picture.
Since she is a stylist in the Austin area she could mix fashion and the city to create a unique background picture suitable for her and her business.
Another important step is creating a brief description outlining who you are and what you do. Most of the time this is the only information someone will get before they go to your business website so including personal information about yourself and business is essential.
Michael Kors does a good job in their description by promoting their brand and at the same time giving the reader an idea of what they sell.

Last week I talked about Facebook and how you can use that platform to help build up your followers and really connect to your customers. Facebook is an important aspect of social media but Twitter has definitely changed the way people communicate and talk. Twitter was originally launched in 2006 but not until 2010 did we see how big it could actually be. With millions of tweets being sent out every minute, it is now in the most top ten visited websites in the world.
One reason Twitter has grown so much in the past couple of years is because of smart phones. These tiny little computers we carry with us everywhere we go has changed the way we talk and communicate with each other on a daily basis. With so many websites, such as Twitter, providing apps for our smart phones, it’s easier then ever to connect with and socialize with each other.
Since more and more people are on Twitter then ever before, people and businesses are learning to network even better then just a couple years ago. The best way to learn more about Twitter using social networking is to find professionals already on Twitter, follow them, and see how they communicate with their followers. The people with the most followers are usually the most active on Twitter and really use this website to their advantage to promote their image or product.
A great way to find a wide variety of professionals in your area of interest is to find someone you already know who has a strong fan base and go to look at who they are following. A lot of times professionals follow other professionals in their field to keep up-to-date on the latest trends and products. One person I follow on Twitter is Rachel Zoe. I think she does a great job on Twitter of promoting her brand and also sharing helpful fashion tips and ideas.
One reason she is so popular on Twitter is due to the fact she tweets several times a day. During the New York Fashion Show recently she posted pictures and links every day and gave her followers an inside look at designer’s upcoming fashion lines in the spring and fall.
In order for an up-and-coming business such as Andrea Whaley’s Wardrobe Interventions to grow, it is necessary for her to consistently tweet about current styles and trends happening in our area. If a business is constantly staying on someone’s newsfeed, it gives that person a reason to follow them if they keep their interest. If used correctly, Twitter can be a great tool for people and business’s to use. Later on I am also going to discuss other features of Twitter and how beneficial they can be.
Facebook is a great social media platform that allows people to connect to each other and gives businesses the opportunity to reach out to its customers or clients. This week I am going to talk about how important a good Facebook page is in order to help grow a business and gain new followers.
Social media is constantly around us and Facebook has really used its abilities to change how people network today. Everyone, at least once, has “Facebooked” a new person they have just met or have at least gone onto a businesses website to see what they are all about. The Internet has changed the way we operate and in order to grow a business such as Wardrobe Interventions, it is important that you have the right tools to help guide you.
I think this video does a great job demonstrating how small businesses can use websites such as Facebook to grow their following and be more productive in their advertising.
Knowing who your audience is and how to target them is extremely important if you want to be successful in how you use social media. Many businesses don’t even need to invest in ads on Facebook, it is just important to keep an updated Facebook page in order to keep people coming back to it. If a business is consistently on someone’s Facebook page they are going to be reminded of them and hopefully remember them in the future.
Wardrobe Interventions Facebook page right now has 110 “likes” and was created in November of 2011. It is really important to get people talking about your business or company and one of our projects is to get Wardrobe Interventions more “likes” on Facebook.
Another key component to a successful Facebook page is having updated pictures and statuses. Since Andrea Whaley is an image consultant it is important for her to be very visual and to consistently have new outfits and accessory options on her page for potential customers to look at. I think it is a great idea that she posted a before and after picture of a closet she overhauled and it would be even more beneficial to her if she could post more before and after pictures of other closets and even client outfits.
Facebook is such a dynamic website and can help businesses in a variety of different ways. By consistently updating, checking and responding to Facebook posts, a business can grow in the amount of “likes” and people who view their page.
In order to make a website more attractive, it is important to have the necessary links and visuals to grow an audience. Almost all the blogs on the Internet today have some type of link to Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and You Tube. All of these social media sites are especially important in the world of fashion because consumers are so visual and love to see the clothes or accessories before they buy them.
Our client, Wardrobe Interventions, has a great website already but to make it even better our group feels like she needs to add more social media links and be more active on websites like Instagram and Pinterest. I know she is not a blogger and just trying to build up her business, but since people are so visual, I feel like her customers would love to see more of what outfits she would put together and how she operates around a client’s budget.
Having a social media bar like this gives her potential customers a better idea of her style and how she puts clothes together. All of these links should take the viewer to her personal page of Twitter or Pinterest and have everything up-to-date and professional.
Having an updated Facebook page, Twitter profile, and Instagram can significantly help grow a business or blog. When people are constantly getting updates about what you posted it reminds them that they follow you and can have a better sense of what you do. Since fashion is constantly changing, it is even more important to keep your websites updated with the latest trends because you don’t ever want to fall behind and have someone else who is better at social media take potential clients. Pinterest is a great website that is easy for the user to stay up-to-date on the latest fashion or trends. Pinning to boards allows you to get new ideas and share your style with your followers.
This person’s boards are very specific and allow you to view certain styles the user has created.
As my blog goes on this semester I plan to look at how Pinterest and other social media sites can help Wardrobe Interventions be even better. It’s important though to make sure that the blogger or business owner has the social media and PR knowledge to help start their business and continue to grow it. Linking your own personal website to well known websites such as Twitter, Facebook, or Pinterest can help grow it significantly.
For my social media class this semester we get to choose a client and work with them using different aspects of social media to help grow their company. This semester we are working with Andrea Whaley and the company, Wardrobe Interventions, she created allows her to go into people’s homes, raid their closets, and throw out all of their bad fashion choices. Doesn’t that sound pretty fun? She operates out of Austin and wants us to help her be more active and up-to-date in the social media scene.
One of the greatest tools in the fashion world today is Instagram. This awesome app and website allows anyone to upload pictures, make comments, and share them across the world. Many companies use Instagram for free advertising and it allows users to easily scroll through a companies page to look at clothes, shoes and other fashion accessories.

In April 2012 Facebook bought Instagram for 1 billion dollars. This goes to show that companies are investing more money then ever in social media and hoping to find more ways to reach more people. With more than 150 million active monthly users, Instagram is becoming one of the most popular sites out there. Instagram is a free way to advertise your clothes or accessories without needing to buy thousands of dollars worth of ad space in magazines.
For start up companies like Wardrobe Interventions, Instagram can really help her reach more people and to spread her ideas across the web. Everyone needs a little fashion help and having a strong social media presence is the best way to reach people in today’s society. When you look around you see hundreds of kids constantly on their phones or computers sharing what they just came across on Facebook or Twitter, start up businesses are using the Internet more than ever to try and reach them.
Throughout the semester our group plans to look at how Instagram can help Andrea’s company even more. Putting together outfits and posting them on an Instagram page is just the start to how effective this website can be. The majority of people using Instagram daily are young people, which are the perfect demographic to advertise to if you want to grow a fashion business.
Finding more ways to incorporate social media is becoming necessary if you want to have a successful business and I’m excited to see how Instagram can help grow Wardrobe Interventions even more!
