#twitterhacked

With so many travesties occurring in recent weeks, it was easy to believe the false tweet composed by an unknown source, and posted to the Associated Press’ twitter account. The tweet falsely stated that an explosion had occurred at the White House, which injured President Obama sending mass panic throughout the twittosphere. The tweet caused immediate reaction on both social and economic scales; it is apparently responsible for the Dow Jones industrial average falling 1%. Thankfully, the situation was handled with superb expediency and @AP_Politics was able to correct the damage isssuing  tweet declaring the previous tweet as a false one. For more info and/or to see the actual tweet, follow the link below! And above all else, be wary of false tweets… they happen.

Paying to Promote Facebook Posts

I recently learned that Facebook would be allowing it’s users the ability to pay to have a post promoted by the site. By paying something around $7, you’d be granted higher priority over others’, unpaid, posts. Call me shady, but I couldn’t resist trying the service out, and to my surprise, it worked. At least, I think it worked? Regardless, my status raked in a not too shabby 30+ likes, and my self esteem was boosted for a mere $7 USD. Apparently, now Facebook is giving us the ability to promote friends posts. So will you be shelling out to help promote a friends’ recent status update? Or to further your narcissistic goal of shameless self promotion? Up to you! Check out the Mashable article below for more.

Social Media & TV

With nearly a third of all television watchers tweeting about television shows, Twitter is willing to bet that TV is the next frontier. With many television networks, such as Bravo already hosting live tweeting, it seems like the next big jump for the social media giant, Twitter to take. Hosting live Twitter traffic has become increasingly mainstream, with the 2012 MTV Music Awards displaying the tweets alongside the stage. We, the audience seem to love being able to simultaneously view the performance as well as the feedback side-by-side and it appears Twitter, Nielsen and other media heavyweights have taken notice. In his Adage.com Q&A, Mike Proulx, senior VP and director of digital strategy at Hill Holliday explains just how keyed in Twitter (@BlueFin Labs) truly is, “One aspect of it is that Bluefin has affinity-relationship algorithms and technology, where you’re able, as a brand or as a TV network, to look at TV shows and then see all of the affinity-relationships based on individuals Twitter data”. This type of data mining is what’s used to match a product with an audience and vis versa. This technology also has numerous other applications like ad targeting and live tweeting as I’ve mentioned before. Check out the link below for the Adage.com Q&A with Mike Proulx.

It’s a Lion Eats Dogg World

Rap, Electronica, House and Reggae; all musical genre’s found at Snoop Dogg… correction, Snoop Lion’s, “Lion Fest” at SXSW. The name change comes courtesy of the notorious rap artist’s latest entrance into the Reggae music genre. Mixing his iconic blend of west coast, gangster rap and newfound Rastafari vibes along with some House music influence courtesy of fellow Viceland performer, Major Lazer. If this sounds at all like a mind trip, it’s for good reason. This show was astoundingly diverse. Held Saturday at popular SXSW venue Viceland, the show managed to fill the relatively large tent in minutes. Snoop successfully melded together the musical stylings and numerous abilities of both himself and ML with a decidedly old school vibe. Along with their new single, “Here Comes the King”, Snoop also revisited his strictly hip-hop days with songs like “The Next Episode” and “Gin and Juice”. Although the crowd found favor with the nostalgic throwbacks, it remains to be seen whether Snoop’s new material will achieve the same following. Regardless, it was refreshing to see a change in such an established artist. From canine to feline, here’s to a successful transition for Snoop. Check out Snoop’s new single, “Here Comes the King” featuring Major Lazer.

Volunteering @ SXSW 2013

Last week here in Austin, South By South West took place with a record number of attendees. At the festival, those in attendance were privy to mass numbers of artists, filmmakers, musicians and other celebrities. Most were unable to meet with these people on a face-to-face basis, unless of course you were, like me, an official SXSW volunteer. Stationed at the Austin Convention Center on Cesar Chavez, I was pleased to be volunteering in the coveted “Greenroom”; where all panelists, guest speakers, and celebrities alike came first to check in and relax before starting their event. Tasked with creating their placards, meeting, greeting and showing them to the refreshments and restrooms, I was able to meet a vast array of celebrities such as Sophia Bush, Fred Armasin and Guy Kawasaki just to name a few. Starstruck to say the least, it was one of the most interesting, stressful and rewarding experiences I’ve had to date. Starting on the first Friday of my Spring Break was a little frustrating; waking up for volunteering at 7 a.m. while the rest of my friends slept in from a night of partying. But in the end, it all paid off, as SXSW volunteers who devote at least 60+ hours recieve a coveted Music Badge! This badge grants you full access to all music events starting the following Tuesday, which just so happens to be the day your volunteering ends. Thos working less than 60+ hours can still recieve a Music Wristband, and those working 80+ hours (kudos to you) recieve Platinum Badges as compensation. Communication and networking skills are a definite must have for those interested in taking a position, and it was a welcome lesson in my intended field of Public Relations. If you’re interested in volunteering for next year’s SXSW festival, I’ve provided a link that you should most definitely check out!
