GDES 3304: End Term Assessment

Grade: B

what did you already know about type, before attending this class? – I feel like I knew the roots of typography, but I struggled with application.
how does this class fit in and expand what you already knew? – I believe the projects, specifically the Fulbright program, helped me practice application further and really exercised my mind in hierarchy and arrangement of text.

what did you love about the semester? – I loved learning about After Effects. I’ve always had interest in digital illustration, so it was fun to learn about taking my illustrations to a different level through animation.

do you “see” it? what are the pieces of “it”? how do they fit together? – I see that putting together a visually interesting product is comprised of many components, and typography is one component that has many sub-parts to it.
did you ask enough questions? did you get enough answers? – Most of my questions came forward when working with After Effects. I had zero experience with the software and had a lot of technical questions. I did ask questions, but mostly just watched a lot of tutorial videos online to teach myself tips and tricks. I got answers both in and out of class.

are you putting in enough practice time? – Yes. I try to doodle in Illustrator almost every day. I also work for the St. Ed’s Athletics Department as a graphic designer, so that involves a lot of outside class time.
are you getting enough feedback? – I think receiving written feedback for each assignment would be beneficial when moving forward. After the video project, we each got the opportunity to have a short desk crit, which I appreciate a lot, however getting that feedback in writing would have allowed it to stick better for me.
were you part of class crits? – For the video assignment, yes. For the Fulbright conference program, not as much as I should have been.
were you at desk crits? – Again, yes for the video assignment, but not as often as I should have been for the Fulbright program.

is your life in order? – The second half of this semester has been incredibly difficult, health and personal-life wise. Currently, my life is not in order. But, I’m working on it.

how could Tuan’s class be a more creative and fun place to be? – Maybe doing an extra credit assignment where we can make basically anything we want, such as a large concert poster, website, or whatever else.

how much have you grown? what is the distance between yourself at the beginning of the semester and now? – I feel like I’ve honestly taken a step back in a lot of aspects, particularly school wise, just because my personal life was getting incredibly hectic and overwhelming. But, I know what I want to accomplish and I feel motivated to work towards that this summer and in the fall. This semester was incredibly difficult for me and I found myself missing a lot of classes and having a difficult time balancing all aspects of my life.
