After our morning in the lab dissecting, we finished our crash course of ecology in the mangroves of Tha Sala. These mangroves were our first real experience being in the mud with some of us getting beyond knee deep in the mud. As we took our hesitant steps we saw snails, slugs, and crabs, while we released the anoxic fumes as we disrupted the mud.
Trees:
- Acrostichum aureum
- Dalbergia candenatensis
- Derris trifoliata
- Heritiera litoralis
- Exoecaria agallocha, the white ooze is poisonous if digested it can result in diarrhea if the ooze gets in your eye it could even blind you.
- Acanthus ebracteatus, it has tiny white spikes for defense and white flowers bloom from this tree.
- Phoenix paludosa
- The thorns of Phoenix paludosa
Trees and their offspring:
- Fruit from the Xylocarpus Granatum, this is a melon like fruit with pores along it’s exterior.
- Braguiera Sexangula
- Seed of the Bruguiera Sexangula
- Seed from the Rhizophora Apiculata tree, it falls from a parent tree and when it logged itself into the ground it beings to grow as a new tree.
- Nypa fruitcans
- The Nypa palm fruit
- Aegiceras corniculaum
- Leaf of the aegiceras corniculaum, the tiny white spec are salt crystals that are filtered out from salt glands in the trees.
Creatures of the Mangroves:
- Mangrove periwinkle snail, Littoraria melanostoma

- Common geloina, Geloina erosa
- Bubble snail, Haminoea sp.

Pollution in the Mangrove, this mangrove is off of the street in Tha Sala, Thailand and is subjected to lots of dumping.
Other plants and creatures found at this mangrove site were Hibiscus tiliaceus, Caesalpinia crista, Elysia bangtawaensis, and Ellobium aurisjudae.
