The library subscribes to over 100 databases. Most databases contain full text or indexing to articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers.  Some databases also contain full text or indexing to book chapters, reports, essays, primary documents, and government documents. Some databases are  multidisciplinary and cover a varirty of topics, while others cover only very specific topics. The databases linked below are recommended for historical research.  However, if you think about your topic in a broader sense, you may want to access the library database page to find other subject databases that will help you with specific aspects of your research, such as religion, education, or law.

  • Academic Search Complete
    Huge database covering virtually every area of academic study including history. Full text articles available for a large percentage of titles. Includes many peer reviewed titles.
  • America: History and Life
    Covers the history and culture of the U. S. and Canada from prehistory to the present. Contains abstracts and citations to journal articles, books and media reviews & dissertations. Contains some linked full text articles. Indexes material you will not find in any other database.
  • American Indian Histories and Cultures
    American Indian Histories and Cultures makes available many rare and significant documents from the Edward E. Ayer Collection at the Newberry Library, Chicago–one of the strongest archival collections on American Indian history in the world. Spanning four hundred years, document types include manuscripts, artworks, speeches and petitions, diaries, correspondence, linguistic and ethnographic studies, photographs, maps, photographs, rare printed books and American Indian newspapers.

    Sourced from the Everett D. Graff Collection at the Newberry Library, Chicago, The American West allows browsers to explore tales of frontier life, pioneers, wild west shows, the gold gush, vigilantes and outlaws. Document types include: manuscripts, trade cards, wanted posters, photographs, claim certificates, news sheets, rare printed works, brand books, broadsides, correspondence, diaries, directories, journals, pamphlets, periodicals, and artworks.   • Bibliography of Native North Americans
    Covers all aspects of native North American culture, history, and life, as well as wide range of topics including archaeology, multicultural relations, gaming, governance, legend, and literacy. BNNA contains more than 80,000 citations for books, essays, journal articles, and government documents of the United States and Canada . Dates of coverage for included content range from the sixteenth century to the present
  • Handbook of Texas
    Provided by the Texas State Historical Association, this is a multidisciplinary encyclopedia of Texas history, geography, and culture. It comprises more than 23,000 articles on people, places, events, historical themes, institutions, and a host of other topic categories.
  • HeritageQuest Online
    Includes family histories, genealogical serials, local histories, and primary sources for genealogical research.
  • Historical Statistics of the United States
    Contains historical statistics on almost all aspects of the U.S., including economics, population, industry, and government. Mainly covers 1790-2000, although some tables have expanded coverage to2003. Also contains explanatory essays on issues such as poverty, labor, education, etc.
    Contains pre-publication, open-access research literature in mathematics, physics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, and statistics.
  • Military & Government Collection
    Designed to offer current news pertaining to all branches of the military, this database offers a collection of periodicals, academic journals and other content pertinent to the increasing needs of those sites. The Military & Government Collection provides full text for nearly 300 journals and periodicals.
  • New York Times, Historical Newspapers
    Indexes 150+ years of The New York Times with full-text available for much of it. Coverage from 1851 to 2001. Excellent primary source.
  • Patrologiae Graecae
    An electronic version of Jacques-Paul Migne’s Patrologiae Graecae. Contains more than 160 volumes of Greek material with Latin translations relevant to the study of the history of the Christian Church.
  • ProQuest Statistical Abstracts of the U.S.
    ProQuest Statistical Abstracts of the U.S. offers statistics on the social, political, and economic conditions of the United States. Coverage: 1790 to present.
  • Texas Digital Sanborn Maps
    Sanborn fire insurance maps indicating building outlines, construction materials, building use, street names, etc. Coverage from 1867-1970, Texas only.
  • Texas Reference Center
    Includes more than 80 full text journals and books about Texas history, ethnic & cultural diversity, gender studies, literature, public health, business as well as home & garden and sports & leisure
  • Times Digital Archive
    Full text access to The Times of London (from 1785) and The Sunday Times (from 1822) until 2006.
