Turning in an assignment late

Late Policy

(The late policy for all assignments is as follows, unless I have provided an assignment specific late policy.  If so, that policy will be provided in the instructions for that assignment)

  • With the exception of the 24-hour late pass, no late work will be accepted for this class unless it has been approved by the instructor prior to the assignment due date. In order to preserve fairness for all students, no deadline extensions will be granted for the following reasons: busyness/outside of course responsibilities, forgetting to upload the assignment, family/other special events, illnesses of friends/extended family members, a student’s illness that does not require hospitalization, oversleeping (but, you may use the 24-hour pass for any of these situations)!
  • Students who are going to be otherwise occupied on assignment due dates may always submit their work early.
  • Written assignments will be considered late if they are turned in after the time and date specified in the assignment instructions.
  • I will not accept any assignments due on Canvas in hard copy or via email.  DO NOT turn in your assignments under my office door or in my mailbox unless you have written permission from me ahead of time to do so.

Makeup Exam Policy

I do not offer makeup/rescheduled exams unless an extenuating circumstance has occurred (see below under ‘Exceptions.’).

24-Hour Free Pass: Students may use one 24-hour free pass at any time during the semester for any reason. However, this pass may only be used for assignments turned in on Canvas (but not for in-class assignments, such as free-writes, reflections, pop quizzes, etc.). In order to use the pass, submit your assignment via the link on Canvas. You do not need to ask for permission ahead of time to use the 24-hour free pass.

Exceptions:  I do reserve the right to make individualized decisions about extensions in cases of extenuating circumstances such as:

  • the student suffered a catastrophic event (for example, a serious injury requiring hospitalization).
  • the student’s immediate family member (parent, spouse, or child) suffered a catastrophic event (for example, a serious injury requiring hospitalization).
  • the death of a loved one
  • an assault, burglary, or car accident that occurred within 12 hours of the assignment deadline and was reported to SEU’s Office of Student Affairs, the SEU Police Department, or the Austin Police Department.

In order to receive an exception to the late policy, be prepared to provide documentation (a photo, obituary, accident/police report, etc.) of the extenuating circumstance. Also, keep in mind that my willingness to grant extensions will be, in part, based on students’ past behavior (students with a record of conscientious behavior during the semester will likely receive more leniency).

Although I am sympathetic to other types of life circumstances that might make it difficult for students to submit their work on time, I cannot provide extensions for events such as:

  • minor illnesses that have not been diagnosed by a doctor
  • roommate/friend illnesses
  • computer/uploading/flash drive/email failures
  • birthdays/family reunions/other special events

Please note, it does not upset or offend me when students turn in work late (and, since I am also a human who periodically encounters life obstacles), I understand that sometimes unexpected things come up.  But, since I’m responsible for ensuring that everyone has the same amount of time to complete assignments (and, I am not prepared to effectively evaluate all of the life events that my 80-100 students may encounter during any one semester), I will generally only provide extensions with written documentation for the types of events listed above.

Disability Accommodations: I will provide accommodations to students with a 504 form from The Office of Disability Services.
