Treatment/Prognosis

ANOREXIA & BULIMIA:

  • Variety of therapeutic approaches have been successful –
    • Individual Psychotherapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Modification
    • Group Therapy
    • Family Therapy
    • Antidepressant Medications (more recently)
  • Treatment of anorexia often requires hospitalization initially in order to ensure that starvation does not progress to fatal or near-fatal levels

OBESITY:

  • Behavioral therapy designed to gradually alter patterns of diet and exercise
  • Medications designed to promote weight loss
  • Combination is more effective than either component by itself
  • Radical approaches to weight control such as ‘fad diets’ actually increase, rather than decrease, obesity.
  • Recent attention has focused on the availability of unhealthy foods and beverages in and near schools.
  • Wide variability in success rates

Eating disorders are chronic.
