ANOREXIA & BULIMIA:
- Variety of therapeutic approaches have been successful –
- Individual Psychotherapy and Cognitive-Behavioral Modification
- Group Therapy
- Family Therapy
- Antidepressant Medications (more recently)
- Treatment of anorexia often requires hospitalization initially in order to ensure that starvation does not progress to fatal or near-fatal levels
OBESITY:
- Behavioral therapy designed to gradually alter patterns of diet and exercise
- Medications designed to promote weight loss
- Combination is more effective than either component by itself
- Radical approaches to weight control such as ‘fad diets’ actually increase, rather than decrease, obesity.
- Recent attention has focused on the availability of unhealthy foods and beverages in and near schools.
- Wide variability in success rates
Eating disorders are chronic.
