Biology Seminar + UT MD Anderson Grad School Recruitment

Our next Biology Seminar speaker will be Dr. Pierre McCrea from UT MD Anderson in Houston, TX on Tuesday Oct. 9 at 5 PM in Carter Auditorium. He will be presenting a talk entitled “Dendritic trees are both functional and beautiful, but how are they formed?”.
His visit will also include a “drop-in” recruitment/info session for the MD Anderson graduate school program starting at 3:30-4:50 PM in JBWS 163. Food and drink will only be available during this session and we invite students to come anytime during this time window.

Biology Seminar on Tuesday 9/18 at 5 PM in Carter Auditorium

The Biology Department is pleased to announce its first Biology Seminar Speaker of the year, Dr. Jonathan Pierce of University of Texas, Austin. His talk will be “Drunk Worms and Sober Mutants: Using a Tiny Worm to Discover How We Get Drunk.” There will be pizza served in the Carter Lobby at 4:30 PM but no food is allowed in the auditorium itself.

Dr. Kirk Jensen Biology Seminar, Carter Auditorium, Friday 3/2 at 5 PM

The Department of Biological Sciences is pleased to host Dr. Kirk Jensen, Assistant Professor from the University of California, Merced. His talk is entitled: “Hacking the immune system: a parasite’s perspective”.  Dr. Jensen‘s work further extends into the role of pathogens in auto-immune gut disorders such as Crohn’s Disease. Carter Auditorium. Friday 3/2 at 5 PM (pizza at 4:30 PM)

Dr. Michael Reiser Seminar 2/26 5PM in Fleck 305

The Department of Biological Sciences is pleased to host Dr. Michael Reiser, a Senior Group Leader from the HHMI Janelia Research Campus for an upcoming seminar. His talk is entitled “Why are flies so hard to swat? The circuits and computations for motion vision in fruit flies”. Dr. Reiser is a pre-eminent scientist combining neurobiological, computer science, and engineering approaches to understand neurological control of animal behavior.

Dr. Mandana Sassanfar (mandana@mit.edu) will be at St. Edward’s on Friday 3/16 at 3 PM in JBWS 267 to answer questions and establish connections with students interested in applying to the MIT Summer Research Program (MSRP) in Cambridge, MA. Dr. Juan S. Ramirez-Lugo Biology Seminar 2/14 at 5 PM

Our Biology Seminar Series continues with Dr. Juan S. Ramirez-Lugo from the University of Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras, who will present a seminar about Science Education and Community building. He will also discuss the state of the island and science education in the post-hurricane environment. The seminar is at 5 PM on Wed. Feb. 14th in the Carter Auditorium, where no food is allowed so pizza will be served outside the auditorium at 4: 30 PM.
