As mentioned in one of our previous blogs. One of the organisations we have drew inspiration from is ‘Taste Before You Waste’. Here in today’s blog I am going to explain further in detail what they do and how they help contribute in their community.

TBYW (Taste Before You Waste) is an organisation founded in Amsterdam back in November 2012. Although this organisation is based in Europe, food waste is a global problem so what thy are doing overseas to help combat this issue should directly relate to what we are doing here in the United States.

Some of the activities they carry out to help save food include food cycle markets, where they hold 2 free food markets per week near downtown Amsterdam, here there try and bring in people and make food waste more of a talking point. We can hear about facts and figures everywhere but when confronted with a serious amount of food in person, it can hit home about how much we waste. Other activities include something they call ‘Wasteless Wednesday Dinners’ which is when they organise weekly dinners for vegetarians made of our food that would of instead gone to waste. By hosting and having people come in and eat with each other makes it more of a social event which would hopefully create a snowball effect where people will start taking it upon themselves to take action to help reduce waste. As well as hosting these more light hearted funner events, they also educate the mass by having educational workshops at event caterings. Just like us at TFWP they share the similar aim of trying to educate as many people as they can on how we can help combat this problem in society.

There are a series of different routes you can go down to get involved at TBYW, if you cannot get involved at these events (which is more than likely since we are an Austin based organisation) you can always donate to help. The events do cost money to run and there is a lot of people behind the scenes who spend a lot for their time working towards the goal of helping reduce food waste across the globe so I am sure any donation’s to them are greatly received. They have many platforms of social media too, one of them I am very familiar with is twitter where they tweet interesting information regularly about food waste.

For more information on ‘Taste Before You Waste’ you can check out their website at http://amsterdam.tastebeforeyouwaste.org/ which they update frequently. They also have a ‘contact us’ page if you want to get in touch with them in regards to any questions or queries.
