Sage Workshop on Friday!

On Friday, October 28th, 2:00-3:00pm in JBWS 363, I will be giving an interactive workshop on the mathematical software Sage.  No previous experience with programming is required, and participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop (but not necessary).  Please make a sagemathcloud account before you come: https://cloud.sagemath.com/

Below are the links to the files we’ll be working through.  Note that they are not editable, so you will have to make a copy.

Directions:

  1.  Log into sagemathcloud.
  2. Create a Project.  Name it something like Sage Tutorial.
  3.  Copy and Paste the link to Part I below.  This will open up in the sagemathcloud.
  4. Go to the “Files” tab near the top, and check the box for the Sage Workshop File.
  5. Copy the file.  Put it in the Sage Tutorial Project.
  6. Go to Projects at the top, and click on the Sage Tutorial Project.  Then click on the Sage Workshop file.

Part II: Introduction to some Sage packages  https://cloud.sagemath.com/projects/689f10e5-4e38-4d99-80cd-b1553dce7f2f/files/Packages.sagews

Hope to see you there!

More Information:

What is Sage?

Sage is a free open-source mathematics software system that uses Python as its underlying language.

Why should you learn how to use Sage?

It can assist with research and math classes:

  • Can check cases, compute examples
  • Sage has many packages, including: game theory, graph theory, polynomials, linear algebra, number theory, Latin Squares, etc.  Packages are always being developed and revised.
  • Creating graphics and animations

What should you do before the workshop?

No prior programming knowledge is necessary. This workshop will be interactive; you’ll be trying out Sage commands and solving problems using Sage.  If you have a laptop, please feel free to bring it.  We will be running Sage through the SageMathCloud: https://cloud.sagemath.com/  To save time, please create an account ahead of time.  It’s completely free (you can pay to upgrade your access, but this is unnecessary for us).  Please email Dr. Kaitlyn Phillipson (kphillip@stedwards.edu) if you have any issues creating an account or have any questions ahead of time.
