Teaching Philosophy

I believe learning is best facilitated by experience and that academic settings provide opportunities to master content and translate learning into skills. Experience grounded in knowledge and developed through critical thinking provides students with a foundation from which to internalize  knowledge and put it into practice. I believe students are learning all the time, integrating material presented in courses so that what happens inside and outside the classroom as students engage in putting knowledge into action.  As such, I strive to present material in a manner that engages the student in a personal way, interacting with the material and with me as a bridge to the learning process.

  Department of E&CP, University of Missouri – Columbia.  Assisted in Lab sessions, organized approximately thirty students into supervision teams of three each, solicited volunteer clients for each student.  Supervised teams of beginning students in a live supervision and observation format.  Participated in group supervision for the team leaders.
• 9/86-5/88           Teaching Assistant – Stress Management Lab, Counseling Center, UMC.
  Conducted three to four group labs per week.  Labs contained 5-7 people and involved educational and experiential components.  Co-facilitated orientation lab for practicum counselors.  Did intake interviews, workshops and presentations, maintained client files.  Developed forms for intake procedures and monitoring client progress.
• 6/87-6/88           Program Coordinator – Women’s Center, UMC
  Processed requests for programs on a wide variety of topics, presented programs, trained and assigned presenters for programs.  Facilitated assertion groups summer and fall semesters.  Made presentations on stress management, assertion training for trainers and co-dependency.
• 2/85-8/86           Program Therapist – Laurelwood Psychiatric Hospital, Houston, Texas.
  General psychiatric inpatient adolescent unit.  Conducted daily therapy sessions with 6-8 patients for both individual and family therapy.  Conducted daily small therapy groups, weekly community groups involving the entire unit, and extended 3-hour groups on Saturday.
• 3/84-7/86           Co-Therapist – Adults Survivors of Incest Group.  Houston, Texas
  A weekly, ongoing group dealing with issues arising from incestuous families.   Group was comprised of 4-6 women meeting weekly for 1 ½ years with marathon days a approximately three month intervals.
• 3/83-3/85           Therapist – Sand Dollar/Family Works.  Houston, Texas
  Conducted sessions for a caseload of 10-25 families and individuals.  Regular co-therapist for family sessions and a women’s group.  Participated in team supervision, live supervision, and training of graduate internship students.  Family of Origin orientation.

• GANESH: Mythic images of Recovery, returning to productive life in recovery from addiction.
• SUBSTANCE ABUSE GROUP: based on neuroscience of imagery, group focused on establishing somatic connection through imagery and facilitated change in conjunction with cognitive behavioral treatment approach in substance abuse setting.
• EIDETIC IMAGERY PROCESS GROUP: Ongoing group beginning 7/2007 using Eidetic Method to facilitate personal growth.
• BODY BASICS : a new approach to motivation– A mind-body approach to fitness. Groups and workshops.  Used principles of Radix Education and Eidetic Imagery to discover impediments to fitness and release built-in resistences.
• RADIX^â GROUPS – Groups and workshops using principals of Radix Education, an approach that incorporates body process in psychological work.
• FOURTH-STEP RECOVERY GROUP – A group for chemically dependent individuals engaged in the fourth step of Alcoholics Anonymous.

• ASSERTION-Basic skill in assertion, two groups of approximately six participants each, somewhat structured, educational format.
• STRESS MANAGEMENT – Facilitator for labs containing approximately six people learning techniques for stress management using biofeedback equipment and autogenic phrases.  Educational and experiential components.

• INPATIENT CHARACTER DISORDER GROUP – V.A. Hospital (5/91-8/91).  Co-facilitated group of character disordered, PTSD, or suicidal patients.
