  4. We are happy to welcome students from Dr. Liezel Massyn’s class at The University of the Free State in South Africa for this week’s discussion. They will continue to post on this discussion board until March 24th.
Estimated time: reading -5 hrs.,viewing documentaries-1.5 hrs., answering questions, reviewing other students’ postings, posting questions for Free State Students, and posting comments- 3hrs. Total: (9.5 hrs.) Additional reading for MLA students: (3hrs.)

Be prepared to discuss the following definitions:

  4. Suppression of Communism Act, 1952 Pass Law, and the 1956 Native Resettlement Act

Be prepared to discuss the following questions:

  1. Describe apartheid and assess why it was established in South Africa in 1948.
  2. Describe the social, economic, and political problems in South Africa prior to the revolution.
  3. Analyze the goals of the 1955 Freedom Charter.
  4. Examine the roles of the African National Congress (ANC) and Nelson Mandela in the South Africa Revolution. (Incorporate information from UTUBE video on Mandela).
  5. Analyze the causes and effects of the 1976 Soweto Uprisings.
  6. Assess how economic sanctions affected the situation in South Africa.
  7. How do De Fronzo’s “five factors” apply to the South African revolution?
  8. Analyze the role of F.W. de Klerk in ending apartheid. (Also, incorporate Part 1 of 4 (10 min): Aparthied: Desmund Tutu and F. W. de Klerk documentary on UTUBE in your answer).
  9. From the Aparthied: Desmund Tutu and F. W. de Klerk documentary on UTUBE, and by doing some researchcomment on Archbishop Desmund Tutu’s significance and his role in ending apartheid in South Africa, as well as his role in reconciling people of various races after the end of apartheid.
  10. Examine the improvements that South Africa has made since the end of apartheid.
  11. Analyze how globalization affected South Africa and the South African revolution.
  12. Examine the major problems that South Africa confronts today.

Post an answer to two questions assigned to you. Then post at least one question for the South African students from The University of the Free State to answer in the designated forum. Be sure to use a separate thread for your question/s, and label it: Question for Free State Students. Your question can be about the South African Revolution, about current conditions in South Africa, about the students’ perceptions of us, or something else you would like to discuss. By Saturday, March 7th, respond to at least two Free State students.  A bonus point will be available for those who respond to at least 3 Free State students the week of March 8th, too. .
