Object lesson (matchbook)

This project was split into three different parts: Research, Matches and Documentation. We were given films to watch and were instructed to focus on one character and identify their style and “objects in their world”. This first phase helps create a base for upcoming projects. Then we took screen shots that we thought best captured that character in one place in the film. The second part of the project was to create a match box, or book, that would fit into that time and place within the character’s life. It needed to reflect their style and the sort of things they lived with in the movie. Then we need to document it, and this becomes important when creating things like a portfolio. I picked A Single Man for my film and focused on the main character, George. A sort of sixties, minimalist style was easily identifiable as it is shown through every aspect of the film, through Tom Ford’s spectacular attention to detail. I created a match box that fit the limited color scheme of the movie, and strived to make it as minimal as possible.
