Indian Prime Minister Assassinated
Indira Gandhi, born on November 19, 1917 was the daughter of India’s first prime minister. She was India’s first female prime minister in 1966. Ran for election again in 1977 but didn’t win the vote, but won the 1980 election. June 1984: Golden Temple in Amritsar was taken over by a sikh seperatist movement, and hundreds were killed in the attempted removal. As a result, a sikh uprising began. On October 31st, two sikh body guards assassinated her, seeking revenge for what happened at the Temple.
Joe Kittinger Completed the First Solo Transatlantic Flight in a Helium Balloon
He was a former Air Force pilot. On September 14 through September 18, he successfully traveled by a helium balloon across the Atlantic Ocean. Leaving from Caribou, Maine, and landing in Montenotte, Italy, he traveled 3500 miles over an 86 hour period of time.
McDonald’s Massacre
On July 18 in California, a man shot 20 people dead and injured 16 in McDonald’s.
First Untethered Space Walk
On February 3rd, 1984, the Space Shuttle Challenger launched into space. It lasted 8 days. They used propulsive backpacks, or jet packs to successfully walk, untethered, in space.The also released two satellites, and conducted a few expirements.
