Junior Portfolio Review

The transformation from where I started to where I am currently is one that embodies the slow process of better understanding my craft. The beginning was really concept heavy, having a lot of ideas that would never really see the full development due to the lack of skills that would allow me to create them fully. Only having a very small grasp of what it meant to be a designer, I had concepts that would’ve been stronger if I had been able to better speak about them.

Throughout my work, I’ve done my best to make sure that the projects were executed in a way that was pertinent to the assignment. Color choice and palettes are also something that I personally feel is a strength. The palette that I created in the matchbook project was thorough to the film it was based on and it can also be seen in the Visual identity mark. Creating concepts is another strength that I can see with my selected works. I overanalyze and self-critique myself enough to push my ideas further. For the plotter project, there were over 80 different iterations before selecting the few to print on brightly colored paper. The designs were better constructed and had more detailed with the expressions.

My physical crafting can be greatly improved, because as you can see with the matchbook project, that the craft took away from the detailed design. In addition, the articulation of my concepts and design choices could be greatly improved, I mentally know the concept and how the design executes it, but my failing is having to speak about it. Improving this can make my concepts and design choices more clear and understandable.

I better understand the process of spitting out multiple iterations to better get ideas out, it really helps flesh out concepts before I was too focused on perfection on concept designs that I wasted a lot of time overanalyzing a dead end concept that could’ve been better used. My mentality has changed from originally thinking that design was mainly supposed to be nice looking with no underlying understanding of what actually makes them nice. Now I have a more in-depth articulation of how design is executed and how to better construct projects.
