Blog #4 (seminar)

Completed works from class

  1. These two pieces are from past and current modules in my visual studies class. The first piece is from the Harmony module and the second is from the Gestalt module. For Gestalt, we had to explore South Congress and experiment with photography to create an image that captured features ofGestalt Psychology. For the Harmony module, we are currently experimenting with line, shape, color, and composition to create analog and digital collages.
  2. I went about exploring the prompt of Gestalt by working with familiar subjects, such as plants. However, as the project progressed, I developed my theme to encompass more features of South Congress. I aimed to take pictures that emphasize symmetry and depth. For Harmony, I wanted to focus more on feeling, as I do in my individual work. I worked with color, shape, and old paintings of mine to create a harmonious piece charged with emotion.

Self Critique

  1. I believe the strongest aspect of the Harmony assignment is the relationship among the colors used. As for the Gestalt photograph, I believe the strongest aspect of this work is the use of reflection in the window.
  2. The weakest aspect of the Harmony piece is definitely the weight. The composition is middle heavy and lacks a sense of spontaneity. As for the other piece, I believe the angle at which the photo was shot could have been much straighter.
  3. The Harmony piece could be strengthened by embracing a sense of minimalism, a concept I usually avoid. Conceptually, I need to become stronger with creating something out of nothing. As for Gestalt, I believe that the composition could improve conceptually by having similar shapes. For example, I would prefer more rectangular shapes to compliment the open sign and border of the photo.
  4. The Harmony piece could be strengthened by giving the composition a sense of freedom. The shapes are very rigid and uniform, which I believe takes away from the effect of the piece. More spacing and creative alignment could be helpful. For the Gestalt project, I believe the composition could become stronger by more dynamic angles and better editing skills.
  5. I am very pleased with the work that I’ve completed so far this semester. I am growing constantly and honing my creative skills through the challenges provided here at St.Edwards. I thrive within the challenges that I face with every creative prompt. I am anxious and excited to see how I grow as an artist from this point on.
