Mathematical sculpture

image I had the incredible opportunity to hear an invited address by George Hart at JMM2015 and attend a hands-on workshop the next day, where we built geometric sculptures out of playing  cards.  The name George Hart was somewhat familiar to me before the conference and I  familiar with the Museum of Math which he founded.  On a seemingly unrelated note, I’d been introduced to Vi Hart’s youtube videos by my students (and Facebook) over the years. It took me till now to put it together and realize they might be related. Sure enough, they are father and daughter.

Building the small structure out of playing cards was way more challenging than I anticipated. It was hard enough to visualize how the pieces fit together properly, but even harder to keep them assembled as you were building. Three pairs of hands were very helpful. I would not recommend trying it alone.
