End Term Dialogue

1.

I think that around 15+ hours of practice every week might be a bit excessive. Considering we all have lots of other classes to attend to, that might be a bit much. I think that anything less than 8~ might be too little time spent practicing. I feel like I’m just in between those two amounts

2.

“Next Level” is absolutely near perfect, as I would assume most would expect. No missing parts, no scuffed lines, near perfect placement and style of all included text, and near perfect synthesis of the colors within the image.

3.

I think the most meaningful feedback I received was on the usage of color. Unfortunately, though, those issues were merely due to the printer and I only was told that ‘It looks professional’. This feedback did not end up helping me in the long run as the lack of criticism on an obviously unfinished piece was not helpful.

4.

The hardest part of making the map was deciding which parts of the campus were worth showing and which parts were not worth showing. It was also difficult to figure out how to properly show those paths and to highlight areas what were worth showing. The most enjoyable part however was mapping and shaping the buildings and also the time spent doing that as it was often done side by side with friends which I found a lot of this semester, particularly because of this class!

5.

I did personal practice drawing and making art in my sketchbook and also digitally on my pad for fun. However, I did not spend a huge amount of time practicing because keeping up with schoolwork took priority.

  1. My life outside of schoolwork affected my schoolwork incredibly negatively. In a perfect world I would love to keep these two separate but the truth is that it is impossible. I hate using my hardships as a ticket to get by which, fortunately I was able to due for the most part this year, but dealing with a death in the family, a falling out with a parent, depression, financial insecurities, and poor communication and assistance from the campus administration with these problems has made this semester a living Hell. But I’m still here, the only thing I think I can say is that most professors tend not to ask while most students tend not to tell. This poor communication is not beneficial for either side and the professors could benefit from a little more concern and the students could benefit from reaching out. Its easy to assume that a student is lazy and unconcerned when in reality they are simply trying their best while managing the many roadblocks placed before them. I am not saying any professor in particular is being willfully ignorant, just that better communication could result in better work from the student and more respect towards the professor. I just personally feel that my problems don’t need to be aired out to anyone and that I should only say something if I know that I cannot complete a given task due to my troubles. Other students however may not deal with their hardships like I do and may need some compassion from those of authority around them, which is understandable. Perhaps professors should do weekly check-ins with their students in the classrooms.

7.

The ideal classroom environment is the exact one provided in our Studio class. The environment is extremely collaborative and unpressed on time restraints and deadlines. The environment is perfectly suited to help students make connections and friendships among others and to benefit from the knowledge and understanding of others. We all were able to respectfully comment and criticize on each other’s work without fear of miscommunication or hostility. If all classroom environments were like this, perhaps much more would be done simply out of respect of the professor and the students and a want to make those people proud, which I know is what motivated me throughout this semester.

Mid-Term Dialogue: Studio

  1. I definitely feel that I could be using more of my free time to practice my methods and my work. I believe that if I spent more time practicing, I would be much more happy with the symbols that I make. Not to mention that I would probably create much more sophisticated and satisfying work. I know that I have time to practice but juggling free time and practice is an extremely hard thing do. Sometimes you can easily feel as if you’ve spent plenty of time on something and be satisfied with it in the moment only to realize it could have been much better or much more polished had you just put some more time in.
  2. I feel that my symbols are definitely minimal in design and by choice, but I also feel that they could have been cleaner in some areas. I think they’re at a medium level of sophistication for sure. Although I would say they are alright, I don’t think that’s very acceptable considering some of the excellent work that’s been produced by other students in the class
  3. I think that I definitely listened to the feedback and I did improve symbols based on that feedback. However, I ended up making fresh symbols that were somewhat disconnected from my themes as I was dissatisfied with my work and find that I create better images without the constraints of a specific idea. But as those constraints are kind of the point, I will take the inspiration I have gotten from these new symbols and attempt to merge them with my original symbols.
  4. I think that I challenged myself quite adequately and definitely attempted to use the software in ways that were unfamiliar to me in order to learn. I am proud of what I have managed to accomplish, even if the work produced is not up to my standards. I feel that there is room for more challenges and will continue to do better as the semester progresses.
  5. I believe I have more expert experience in other fields, but as far as Illustrator goes, I am not so skilled. I’ve never been good with illustrator and personally enjoy and always have enjoyed the other tools and software at my disposal more than illustrator. I think I spend quite a large amount of time studying and practicing other mediums of design and art.
  6. As far classmates and connections go, I have definitely made and continue to make meaningful relationships and friendships with the people I meet in my classes and do my best to absorb as much knowledge from their experiences and talents as I can to improve myself and my work as well as to contribute what I can to others. And I do feel that my development has been mature and professional.
  7. I feel that I have been encouraging, however, I feel that my work has not influenced or inspired anyone so I would say that my contribution to the climate would be somewhat room temperature if anything.

Part 1

I really enjoyed Prof. Vitone’s presentation. His photos were great, and as someone who loves photography, I found his presentation to be the most interesting of them all.

Part 2

I feel like this semester was a bit tough and I hope that the next semester is a bit more forgiving. Hopefully I have become more adjusted to the college lifestyle.

The Alumni presentations have shown me that internships can open up many doors for future careers. Having a previous relationship with major figures in your field of work can give you a major edge in the competition to find work.

Part 1

The goal of the project I am going to talk about was to draw a cow skull choosing to use one of many types of materials. I did so using White and Black Charcoal pencils.

Part 2

I think the strongest aspect of this work is the overall form. The weakest aspect was the shading which I didn’t do to well on. Conceptually, the piece could be improved with better planning on the location of the subject on the paper. The piece could be improved technically by improving the shading.

Part 1

We had some people who are working on an indie game called Wildermyth, which is a classic RPG style game starring a roster of random characters that are randomly generated. The developers are a Husband/Wife team. I learned about the issues that arrive with managing a budget and the importance of publicity by putting your product out there via social media, or booths in a convention.

Part 2

I would ask the Faculty presenters how they manage the stress produced by large workloads and managing multiple classes with many students.

PART 1

The art showcases were very interesting. I enjoyed them all. It was nice to finally see some art without any talking. I think that too much talking can make a piece boring to me, whereas this was interesting and had a unique flow that allowed me to enjoy these pieces and make my own interpretations. I also thought that the speaker who presented their 4 iterations of a musical, was the most interesting.

PART 2

-My plan for college is to finish all required classes necessary for my degree. Then, once I have acquired my degree and graduate from this college, I will move to Houston where I will pursue work a Graphic Designer.

Entrepreneurs vs. Artists/”The key to success? Grit.”

Entrepreneurs vs. Artists

This post is in response to two articles, What entrepreneurs can learn from artists and Are Artists Entrepreneurs?, by Tim Leberecht and Amit Gupta respectively. The first article focuses on the idea that entrepreneurs should adopt certain traits from artists in order to improve themselves. The second article does the opposite and talks about what artists should learn from entrepreneurs. The second article says that Artists should learn to make networks for themselves consisting of people and allies that can boost their work, which entrepreneurs already know how to do. In the first article, I would agree that artists are craftspeople and that they are humanists. I would also add that artists are good with emotion, they are able to read people and express that feeling in a way that relates to said people, an ability that an entrepreneur would benefit from. These articles are very insightful to the differences and similarities of the creative and rational minds of artists and entrepreneurs. It is interesting to see what each has to say about the other and it is certain that they could learn much form each other.

“The key to success? Grit.”

After taking Angela Lee Duckworth’s grit test, I have discovered that I do not have much grit. I should attempt to improve this, I could do so by strengthening my will, forcing myself to finish what I start. It might also help to organize my life by setting priorities and maybe establishing a schedule to help me to do what needs to be done, on time instead of late, a good example would have been me posting this last week when it was due instead of today, a week late.
