His unrivalled pictures of star trails were taken over a period of up to 15 hours in Bendigo, Australia over the scenic Lake Eppalock. Captured using a long exposure lens, the trails are created as the Earth rotates, giving the impression of the stars moving across the sky. Lincoln, 36, bought his first camera last year to take pictures of clothes he wanted to sell on eBay. SEE CATERS COPY.

Out of all the Alumni presentations, I resonated with Alex Roka’s the most. Because I am a graphic design major, I was very intrigued by what he had to say. When he told us about his journey from college and beyond, I feel like I related because I could imagine myself in those situations as a graphic designer. It was very cool to see his designs for logos and branding because that’s something I’m really interested in doing with my career. Although I am not interested in arts at all, the girl who presented as an art major was also very helpful. She gave great advice and I could really tell where she was coming from. She seemed very successful, and that’s probably due to following her own advice. I learned from her that it it is really, really important to take risks and put yourself out there. That piece advice is something I will try my hardest to work on. You won’t really be successful if no one knows who you are, or has never even heard of you.

end term assesment

Nothing has really altered my expert hours since mid-semester. Probably not even since the beginning. I mean I knew all the programs coming in, this class was just a matter of getting things done in a timely manner. The projects were enjoyable, i just comes down to me wishing I put more time into this class and actually liked what I produced.

I did not use my time wisely this semester. Time spent watching Netflix and eating food could’ve have been time spent on getting ideas for the projects, which I really regret. It’s a lame excuse, but I think I took on too many classes. All my motivation and willpower went into my rhet/comp class to be honest. The amount of time and tears I put into my papers really paid off because I got As on all of them. Balancing the practice hours I need for my major is something I really need to work on…

I honestly didn’t take feedback too much to heart, no matter if it was good or bad, because I didn’t really plan on putting the work into changing it. I don’t really know if I gave any beneficial feedback though. All I know is that some people produced some really nice stuff and just left me regretting my inability to go above and beyond.

The amount of love in my work is little to none. I did not spend as nearly enough time on the assignments to project any of my love for them. A steady relationship requires an abundant amount of attention, caring, and effort. I hardly put any of that into my work:(

Like I said, I knew the programs coming in, so I didn’t really ever feel compelled to just open photoshop and fiddle around when there’s an essay I should be writing. The class was great and definitely a learning experience though. That said, I only did class projects.

use of practice time: 6pts
how I dealt with feedback: 6pts
level of love in my work: 8pts
my inventory of expert experiences: 6pts

Who did you most relate to? and why?

I related to the graphic designer, Alex, the most because I was so in awe at his work. I could understand and relate to what he said about his job and that honestly makes me excited for the future.

Who surprised you? and why?

The one that surprised me most was the girl who had defined an “artist” as so much more than someone who thinks creatively. I never thought that an artist has so many underlying layers and requires a variety different skills to truly be one.

What was the most valuable piece of advice you heard today?

I learned that I should not be afraid to take risks. You never get anywhere if you just stay where you’re at and that’s really important for me to understand since I have a tendency to keep inside my own bubble.

My greatest strengths in my Rhet & Comp and freshman studies classes include:
writing skills, listening skills.

For greater success in this course, I need to:
learn how to take better notes during a lecture. Right now I’m relying on recordings and it’s not working out so well.

My computer skills include: knowing how to operate both Mac and PCs efficiently, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Microsoft office

I still need to learn: the rest of the Adobe programs

Research & writing skills: I know how find what I’m looking for when I write research papers and elaborate on the topic so that I get my point across.

I need to work on these aspects of research and writing: I really need to heighten my vocabulary, and not just for writing papers. I literally can’t write a paper without a thesaurus.com tab open.

I learn best & accomplish most when: I actually listen. I never thought sitting at the front of the class ever helped, but it turns out that it really does.

What is the strongest aspect of this work?
I think the strongest aspect is the way I was able to blend the colors.

What is the weakest aspect?
It’s not super neat in real life. You can see dried glue marks and the exacto knife work is less than sub-par.

How can the composition or form be improved?
When I look at it closely, the way the arch of the rainbow really bothers me. It’s not a perfect arch and doesn’t angle how an actual rainbow would.

How can the project be strengthened conceptually?
I focused a lot on the aesthetic and not some much on the concept. I always seem to create something I like to look at, and then go in and try to find a meaning.

How can the project be strengthened technically?
If it was on a larger scale, I think it would be more neat and prettier to look at.

Project Two: Harmony Part 1

IMG_0431First 3D Project: For this collage, I first took pictures of leaves. Then I changed the color of the leaves in Photoshop, printed them out, and cut them into small pieces. This collage honestly had no deep meaning when I began it. But while I was cutting little pieces of leaves I realized the meaning could be this: The leaves are something that fall, and things that fall can always come back up and make something beautiful (aka the rainbow.)

IMG_3076First 2D Project: I looked through all my SoCo pics and found a lot of graffiti and signage. Then I found this photo of mirrors and thought all these iconic SoCo places would look cool in place of the mirror. I guess this project highlights the memorable and most popular parts of South Congress. It also kind of contrasts old and new, with the mirrors and antiques being old/vintage, and the photos inside are the modern touch.

Sofie Hannibal and Nan Na Hvass are the two women who run Hvass & Hannibal, a Copenhagen-based art and design studio. They make things from album covers to billboards. My favorite part about their stuff is that it reminds me of pure chaos. There are so many things to look at and the mind is not left wondering. Everything is so colorful and my eyes are just so pleased at the variety of it. It’s obviously very three dimensional, yet also very flat. The weirdness and assortment of so many seemingly random things is what really draws me to it.
