First Reading Assignment

What is your personal view of the difference between the designer and the artist?

I believe anyone can be an artist if they have the desire and emotional capacity, but that does not mean everyone is an artist. The difference to me is that the designer makes functional art, and the artist creates emotional masterpieces.

Which are you, why?

I am an artist. I create what is inside of me and express it to the world. I have never had a desire to be a designer.

Artist Elizabeth Chapin’s painting’s that are exhibited at Wally Workman Gallery use a world of color to express her emotions about a variety of topics. As a parent she has strong opinions on the way people spend their time and the relationship that has with social media. These concepts are apparent in her works and are presented with a southern twist to them. Her paintings are a mix of realism and fauvism. Most of her paintings show people, but some have the aspect of nature. Elizabeth Tiger describes the artist’s process as follows “She’s not usually painting for the sake of painting; she is painting for the sake of telling the story of each person she paints, unfiltered by her own assumptions.” This is evident in the majority of her paintings, as you can see the emotion and story behind each work. This is shown through the expressions on the peoples faces and their body language. I find these paintings fascinating, and you can hear her talk more about her pieces on this website:http://wallyworkmangallery.com/blog.lasso?linkid=1433.

Some of my favorite pieces by Chapin include “The Green Room”, “Instagramming El Cosmico”, “Only for One Place”, and “Mouthful of Forevers”. You can see these works listed below.

My Projects Visu1100

This semester I have been working on my drawing skills and developing better artistic habits. These are a few of the works I have done in drawing 1 and outside of class. The glass drawing was a challenge for me because I have never drawn glass before. I am also practicing my skills with prisma colors. Ive never drawn animal fur before so I attempted to draw my cat Einstein. With practice I’ve gotten a lot better with prismacolors. I have a little practice with pen drawing but I wanted to practice so I used pen to complete my shoe drawing assignment. Im pretty proud of all of these projects and I hope to continue developing my skills.

This course has been helpful and informative for me over the past semester. I was able to see others work and how they got to be where they are now, which was inspirational and helpful because it gave me ideas for how to reach a similar goal. Something I would have liked to have done is get help from peers on the work we were doing in visual studies. Having group discussions amongst a few classmates about how to improve work or just ideas would be helpful. This could even extend to faculty help or input.

  1. The Faculty Presentations with Bill Kennedy, Hollis Hammond’s, Alex Robinson, Tammy Rubin, and Joe Vitone were interesting and informative. I was inspired by a lot of the professors work, like Hollis’ wooden structures and trash drawings, and Tammy’s 3D collage sculptures. I was also impressed with Bill’s reconstructed photographs, Joe’s ranch photographs, and Alex’s minimalistic works.
  2. My 5 year plan is to finish college in four years with a writing degree and an art minor. During the summer i will intern at various companies that will accept me. I hope that by interning at a few places i can build up a resume and find a writing job once I graduate. I expect I will have to start small and work my way up and eventually I want to write a series of fictional kids chapter books with my own illustrating.

  1. The presenters that visited on Monday were from Spacetime Studios, a game company that has developed quite a few games including Pocket Legends. The presenters Gary, Bryant Wood, and Eva Tran, taught me a great deal about the game industry and the struggles that are involved. There are a lot more positions than I realized in the game industry, such as designers, and concept artists like Bryant and Eva. I learned that in the game industry you may run into long hours, fierce competition, poorly run management, and definitely challenging customers. The most important part of this industry would me marketing and gaining revenue, especially if your game is free. Overall I thought this was a valuable presentation and interesting too.
  2. Some questions i’d like to ask faculty are: Have you been through any internship programs that have helped you become more successful? If so what were they and what did they teach you?

Pt. 2

My current career interests are in writing, so I found a few internships that could help develop my skills. There is a company in Austin called MXDWN, offering an internship that asks the intern to write reviews about local music. This internship sounds interesting to me and would help me develop my writing skills. Another internship I would be interested in is in houston through a company called Tuc Magezine. This is a modern company that has a urban culture magazine where the intern would do editing and fact checking and occasional writing for the magazine. This is interesting to me and would help me build my resume while also giving me good experience in writing and editing. I thought it would also be a good idea to get a little more familiar with publishing if I want to be an author, so i found an internship with the company Browns Books Publishing. This would boost my experience along with my resume.

1)How planned is your future/ how customized is it to you?

At this point in my life I’m unsure of my career path or what I am majoring in, all I know is that I am minoring in art. I plan to do internships and take classes to explore my interests such as writing.

2)If you could travel abroad where would you go and why?

I hope to study abroad next year second semester and go to Barcelona, Spain. I’ve always thought that city was beautiful and has so much culture. I already speak a little Spanish, so learning more about the culture would be really interesting to me.

3)Are you part of a student group? what kind of extra curricular activities would you like to see?

I am not a part of any student group currently, but I plan to join group x and take yoga classes regularly. Besides yoga I would like to be a part of an art group or maybe writing, to help me explore my interest in becoming an author and illustrator.
