Fill that dirty mouth of yours with pearly whites :)

Hi, Class!

This is my last entry blog, so I’ll make it quick! If you’re tired of using the same old conventional toothpaste and/or interested in exploring an alternative to store-bought natural toothpaste brands, please read and click on the links below.

Each of these blogs and the recipe I share with you provides a unique insight into why trying out a homemade toothpaste could be a healthier choice for you. When you want to minimize the quantities of chemicals that you encounter, then an all natural toothpaste is certainly the better option vs. the traditional chemical-filled toothpaste.

Ingredients:

– 6 tbsp coconut oil

– 6 tbsp baking soda

– 25 drops essential oil (I’ve used peppermint & clove, but you can honestly use whatever, i.e. eucalyptus)

– 1 tsp stevia (optional, and add more if you like it sweeter)

Directions:

1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and stir well. You can use a whisk if you like to try and give it a light creamy texture- I just used a spoon. 🙂

2. Pour into a small glass jar and seal it up until ready to use.

FYI: There’s no need to over think how to get the toothpaste out of the glass jar, just gently douse the toothbrush right into the mixture and be done. I feel if I offer to share my toothpaste, it’s with people I trust, plus not a huge germophobe here. If you are, then try spreading the paste with a spoon or storing it inside a squeeze bottle.

Remember, commercial toothpaste is filled with ingredients that can be harmful to us, especially in large doses. For example, fluoride, sodium laurel sulfate, and saccharin. The issue of fluoride is debatable since fluoride is known to help fight cavities, but the other truth is that fluoride is toxic in high doses. Most of us have fluoride in our water supply, including Austin’s drinking water which is monitored at a level optimal for oral health. But if you’re overexposed to fluoride, it can cause mottled teeth.

Sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) is a by-product of aluminum manufacturing that is found in rat poisons and utilized in normal toothpaste to make foam. It is also a skin irritant for most people and known to cause canker sores. Saccharin is used to sweeten many kinds of toothpaste and mouthwashes. It has been shown to cause kidney cancer in lab rats.

I have nothing but positive reviews for this DIY toothpaste recipe and have been using it for quite some time- despite after learning baking soda can be too hard on teeth’s enamel. As of now, I’ve received no major complaints about bad breath (at least to my face, ha) nor experience toothaches/other dental pains. Both peppermint EO & clove EO helps eliminate bacteria in your mouth, freshens bad breath and relieves mouth ulcers as it holds germicidal properties. Thus, I believe your oral health and wallet can benefit from products made with simple ingredients and essential oils!
